Skip the XP with our short change intervals, the regular 51515 is fine. Napa gold 1515 is the same. Motorcraft FL1a is also good. Mobil1 15w50 is another option, the VR1 has gotten pretty spendy.

Well with as many boats that you have... how much is it by you? It’s around 450 here.

I haven’t seen it under $6/qt in several years. Usually about $7.

M1 is $5, give or take.

M1 15w50
M1-301/M1-301a

Easy to find and relatively cheap.

Mobile 1 15w50 Motorcraft FL1A filter change every 50 hours. I have been using this since 1989 . Walmart is a good place to buy it.

Going back a ways to gotta be more than one of the 42,000 threads on oil recommendations, I thought we were historically told by folks on here to steer clear of the synthetic oil.. Dont recall reasoning.

In a few of my engine tinkering episodes, the brother of a friend (the friend being the submarine guy I've written about a few times) who was visiting here from MI has worked in the GM engine division forever told me mobil1 was the way to go a few years ago. Did I miss something along the way.

That’s a generic statement that’s probably more incorrect than not.

I run Mobil1, but that doesn’t make your statement any less misleading. Most M1 grades have insufficient zddp for FT cams.

Just saying, some people think it's good oil even for a FT engine, including some CCFs.

15w50 as recommended above has 1200 parts of zddp.

That's the info I got from a guy that designs, builds and tests engines.

I guess the distinction and clarification that I was asking tim for that he didnt give was that the difference was FT vs non FT engines. I wasnt sure what kind the OP's 89 had, that's why I asked the question.

That statement is correct, but the generic “M1 is ok for FT engines” is not... as you can see, the zddp levels are all over the map and dependent on grade and weight.

All ford marine engines are FT. Chevy went roller around 1997.
