New to the forum so thank you all in advance...
I am restoring my late grandfathers 1968 Ford Interceptor 289. Wasn't running and came from a 3rd party. (I was luck to find it) Motor is RH rotation. Motor came with a crankshaft that has the RMS mating surface machined down about .010.. Not only did this make the mating surface smaller it machined flat the directional "knurls" that keep oil in the motor. Someone installed a Fel Pro crankshaft sleeve over the area. When I opened the motor I saw the RMS rubber melted to the sleeve. I am debating my options for reassembly. 1) D0 I reinstall another sleeve? The Felpro is a bit loose and appears that it might be too big for the two piece RMS. I did find a SKF Redi Sleeve that is .005 smaller and may fit better. However, Fel Pro does not recommend the use of a sleeve with their 2 piece seal. I presume since they do not have "knurls" built into them and rely on those machined into the crankshaft. (something the sleeves do not have) 2) Ideas on a source for another 289 RH rotation crankshaft 3) Can I convert to a one piece seal and use the smaller Redi Sleeve that fits better. The one piece seals have their own "knurls" that keep oil out. Only problem, NO ONE makes a one piece seal for a RH 289/302 Ford. However, I heard somewhere that ReidP on this site may have them? 4) Could anyone weld a crankshaft like this, build up the area, machine to spec and add the "knurls". Any advice is appreciated. |

Maybe use the redi sleeve & add some knurls with a sharp file. Doesn't have t be pretty to work.

Interesting idea. Just need to be mindful that the sleeve is only .010. Don't want to wear through with my file.

The rocket scientists who had the boat before me used a automotive crank in my 302,those little knurls surprisingly pumped out alot of oil. The machine shop's fix was to install a redi/speedi sleeve and use a rope seal. Rope seals now are very hard to find too. From my understanding a good shop can machine an old block to accept a 1 piece seal. The problem would be finding a 289/302 reverse seal. This is the one for a 351,unfortunately I think it's bigger than a 289/302.

Did the sleeve + rope seal work or did it leak? Somewhere I read the rope seals needed the knurls.

Weeps a tad not enough to bother but if I was doing it again I'd look into machining a 1 piece. The major problem will be the seal don't know if there is a way around that
