Hello All,
I'm getting ready to start on my engine, and need some pics showing the Factory wiring.
The engine is a 83 351..
Reason I need is the person that had before me did some strange things to it, wires cut, wires that don't go anywhere and to top it off there is a coil screwed into one of the Valve covers....
Appreciate any and all pics,
JT

Depending on what you have for an alternator, ignition system/ballast resistor and starter on the engine, pictures might not do much good.

Some of those wires that go nowhere could be because of changes the previous owner made to the alternator, starter, or ignition system

The TRB diagram below would be accurate for an 83 and it has all the wiring colors shown.

Like the legend in the lower right corner says, old style starter, internally regulated alternator and a voltmeter not a ammeter

Depending on the condition of your engine harness you might think about the SkiDim harness in the link part number 71306

And maybe some new valve covers too

I'm not real good with electrical, but when I checked out link it said for a 87. I will call them and see if it will fit the 83.

Still would like some pics if anyone has them.

Thanks

Valve covers on order

It does say in the link that it works on prior to 87 with a ballast resistor. You'd need to run a wire to the coil from the resistor if you have a resistor.

And it's not for an externally regulated alternator (82 and prior)

Your 83 should be able to use that harness, but a phone call should be helpful.

John,
I feel you are on the correct path looking for a harness to start over! Wow, for sure the PO did some hack work in his back yard!

Wow you weren’t kidding. That coil is literally screwed into the valve cover. I wondered what you meant by that.

Well, that is quite a mess you have there.

At first I noticed the 302 markings on the flame arrestor and then one of those pesky little voices in my head said "that might be a 302 under all that wire."

Maybe it's just the angle of the picture and all the wire everywhere but it looks kinda skinny between the valve covers.

If you look at the thread in the link, you'll see measurements across a 351 manifold and also a 302 manifold on page 2 about 3/4 of the way down.

Good luck and I hope the little voice is wrong and you have about 9 1/4 inches and not about 7 1/2 between the manifold mounting bolts

Wow, someone who's PO had about as much creative wiring going on as I encountered with mine.   Don't envy your task...... been there and it wasn't really fun.
