Alright folks, I have a 1974 ski Tique (?) that I grew up driving and skiing behind. My Uncle let her sit half covered for six years in the New Hampshire weather. I’ve got some rotten stringers and an engine rebuild ahead of me. I need help with anything you want to offer and need to figure out how to find out original paint and interior colors so I can replace.

Pics to come once I figure out how to add them!

This could be a good news, bad news thing here but in 1974 there was no Ski Tique in the lineup. It didn't show up till 1976.

So if you have a Ski Tique it's at least a 76 .

Or you have some other model from 74

Post the HIN number on the upper right side of the transom just below the rub rail and that'll help figure out what you have.

What's it have for an engine?

Here are a few pics. It's got a small block Ford 302 and it's HIN is CTC0376616STMM-76

So, I'd guess it's a 76 then?

Thanks for all the input, guys! I really appreciate it. My husband is getting the motor going again, I'll be tackling the rot - anyone have any tips on digging out rotten stringers and replacing and using resin or fiberglass?

You'll have to forgive me if I use the wrong terms- and please educate me! This girl has been an avid slalom skier since the late 80s but I have never restored a boat before. This boat is apart of me though and I want to treat her right and hope to someday teach my boys (4 and 10 months) to ski behind her, too!

I would suggest starting to read some of the rebuild threads. Get a game plan and then share it. You will get more feed back then. We went in to our tique fairly blind (other than reading this site for years) and people were very helpful as we had questions. First up, strip the boat and cut out the floor. We did a pretty detailed thread called “new to me ski tique”. There are lots of other great stringer, rebuild threads as well. Use google to search with the site name in the search.

The very thorough and useful thread referenced above. (he's a big help, not even remembering the name of his own thread)

Back in the day it was a SKIER 16 foot. around 75/76 we started to paint SKI TIQUE on the hull. Mustangs were 16 or 17 foot. with a different interior set up. Normal was a bench seat ski pole was a add on.

That HN threw me a bit. My ski tique ended in M75E. According to one of the many HIN interpretation websites, the M is a general designation for "model year" and is not boat specific. So there is nothing in mine to designate a ski tique, model year 75, which is odd, since it must be model year 76, and the E is December. I guess if M really stood for Mfg year, then it would make sense. So the ST in Risley's HIN suggests Skit Tique, not sure what the extra M designates. Guess CC was still fiddling with HIN format, as apparently there was more than one.

Very cool score. Take your time, do a nice pro job and you’ll have a real keeper. Do not be in too much. Of a rush and it will pay off. Think of the restoration as a relaxing past time and enjoy

This is my brother's son-in-law's boat that he built himself from the keel, up. He named it "Next Summer" because that's what he told people for 7 years when they asked him when it would be ready for the water.

OK, just kidding, good luck with the project.

Hi Guys,
The boat has a new to it engine from an F150 that we're working on getting running. The old 302 block was a reverse rotation, this is a standard. How do you suggest we ensure the transmission stays happy going from reverse to standard rotation.

Thanks in advance!

The trans doesn't care as long as the trans pump is indexed to the rotation of the engine.

Did I miss something - what's up with the original engine?

Brian & Ben (I'm assuming here based on the usernames so correct me if I'm wrong),

The original motor crank snapped in two. I was taking a ride one terrible summer 6 yrs ago and turned (not going too fast but certainly more than headway speed) and she just died. Come to find out, the crank snapped. My dad had a F150 Block in his barn, replacement motor for the '83 truck my brother wrecked. He brought it up to the lake and my Uncle wouldn't let anyone else touch it. Fast forward 6 yrs and we finally got the boat away from Scott, who was doing only harm, and here we are. Scott is wet-brained (severe alcoholic) so he doesn't remember what he did yesterday much less 6 yrs ago to the poor boat.

Some pics of what's going on right now. My dad asked if he should buy a marine short block because he scrapped the org. motor.

Risley,
No such thing as a "marine" short block. Marine engines become marine when the marine components are bolted onto an automotive block.

If you click on the down arrow next to screen names, then click on the members profile, real names come up if the member has entered their name.

Ahh, thanks Peter! What's your take, should we start fresh with a new to us 302? (thinking about the advice on that other thread we were commenting on earlier re: a grand marquis with a grandma driver)

Well, to split hairs unnecessarily, there is a truck/marine 351 short lock is different than the auto shortblock. The difference is the spot-faced rods and bolts, leaving more material where the rod is thinnest.
That said, there is no 302 equivalent, like Pete explained

Keeping it reverse rotation would be to your advantage

Procuring a low miles 302 would accelerated things

Thanks, Tom! The problem I forsee now (if I'm understanding correctly) is getting all the RR stuff- since the original engine was scrapped. Am I correct is assuming if we did get a low miles 302 we'd still need to get all of the (I don't even know what all of the entails) RR "stuff"?

I am on board that keeping the boat RR is the right thing to do- having it flip, or try to, while I am skiing or teaching my sons to ski is not ideal.

Don't be revising history you two - Yes there was a Ford Marine Division of the Ford Motor Company and yes they did supply marine versions of the 302 and 351.
