Hey guys. Just purchased the boat. A 78 Ski Nautique with the 351. My impeller is missing chunks. I checked the thermostat housing and found no thermostat was installed. Does this mean a total rebuild?

Andrew,
Rebuild of what? The RWP or are you thinking engine? Unless the engine was overheated and run for some time, I would say no. Keep an eye for signs of water in the oil. If you are thinking the RWP, then no. Just get a new impeller in it. A T stat would help too! |

The Thermostat lets water out, not in
Check the status housing water inlet, it's inside dimensions are quite small And check the exhaust manifold inlets |

Ok. I was thinking the chunks would have went down the intake and into the motor

Don’t forget to check the water pump IINLET hose. When my impeller broke apart, I found the broken vanes there. Most folks including myself initially check downstream from the water pump. Often the broken vanes obstruct the water inlet side.

It’s gotta let it in to let it out. It doesn’t magically produce water. |

huh, seems my careless brevity caused some seasons-closing consternations...
Permit me to rephrase... Water exits the engine block through the tstat Its presence could only trap pieces exiting the block, but impeller chunks would rather plug inlets , then if get through skip the block entirely and go out the manifolds, as that is where the major flow and delta-p is. in summary, Its a gazouta, not a gazinta |

So thinking about this in the fuel lines...there are little screens here and there in the fuel path.
Could there be a way to screen the pipe from the RWP exit before it "gazinta" the engine thereby capturing the chunks? |
