So in the owners manual for PCMs and on the engine covers there is a Max RPM and an "Max continuous cruise. "
What does exactly "Maximum Continous Cruise" mean? How long of a period can you operate your engine above "max continuous cruse" and not damage your engine?
For example, my owners manual states 4000 RPM max continuous cruise. I like to slalom and everyone else likes to surf. If I prop the boat so that I am running slalom speeds at 4300-4400 RPMs is that bad for my engine? I have never heard a good answer as to how long you can be over maximum cruise RPMS. I have contacted PCM and they haven't returned any emails.

We use 80% load as a baseline in the industry for "recommended high cruise" (marine diesel). If I applied that to my ski boat using RPM vs load I would land at 4160RPM which I feel I could run at all day and often do. So 80% of 5200 is 4160 and around 40MPH. Thats is running the 13 ACME. Numbers go down a bit with the OJ.
It aint perfect but its all I got.
Im gonna get lit up for this for sure.. LOL.

I'd go 4000 max continuous all day. Think about all the gen sets out there running at 3600 for weeks or even months.

Not so concerned about running at 4000 RPM. But more the slalom or barefoot run at 4300-4500 RPMS. Granted those runs are usually are short.    Just curious what peoples opinion is about running over max cruising rpms for a few minutes. How long is too long?

Are you turning 4300 plus for a 36MPH slalom run?

If you intend to slalom at 4300 i'm not sure how you're going to foot unless you foot too slow 36-37 like myself.

that said, I think your overthinking the rpms. Some of these boats lived their whole life near wot and near max rpms. I'm talking decades. well over 2000 hours

I 'm still wrapping my head about reconfiguring one's boat to this severity to do something that's this contrary to your skiing and footing

then maybe i just think surfing has little redeeming value in contrast to its negatives.

Maybe the question to start with would be what kind of engine speed do you have for getting that surf speed and how much weight is in the boat since you seem to want to reprop for surfing?

Or what is your rpm now at your slalom/barefoot speed and at surf speed?

Not really here to debate surfing or what prop should use. I dont think I need to re prop for surfing.    I don't really do that much barefooting and when I do i go pretty slow so not worried about that either.

But here is the information and where I am coming from.
330 excalibur 2006 SV 211 Stock ballast used 730 pounds. Surfs just fine.

at 3500' elevation
644 prop 13.25 x 16 .105 cup
surfs at 2550 RPM 10 mph.
30 MPH at 3800 RPM
Skiing at 32 mph 4000 RPM

at 6500 elevation
644 prop
Surfs at 2650 RPM
32 mph 3900 RPM
I know all that looks good but it is kind of slow out of the hole.

856 prop 13.25 x 15.5 and .06 cup
at 3500' elevation
surfs at 2940 rpm
Skis at about 4300 RPM at 32 mph.
cruises at 30 at 4000 RPM.

856 has a ton better hole shot.

I am really here to ask what does "continuous" mean when it comes to continuous cruise and am i shortening the life of my engine by making a couple of slalom runs at rpms over max continuous cruise. (How long is continuous?)
Is it better to run at high RPMs for a few minutes in the morning for my slalom runs than lug the engine down surfing at low RPMs for longer periods?   (I dont know if I am really doing that at 2500 RPM). I really just like the hole shot better with the 856 but also want the engine to last a long time.
Bottom line. I like the performance of the boat better with the 856 on it but a bit worried about the RPMs being over PCMs "Maximum continuous cruise" when I ski.

I think like others said continuous is a lot longer than your ski ride
