I have been told the an automotive ford 302 HEI distributor can be used in my 78 Tique. The modification requires changing the gear for LH to RH by removing the roll pin and using the old gear if not worn. The second issue is vacuum advance verse centrifugal spring advance and the need to find a vacuum source. Spacing on engine for timing rotation has limits so finding the correct tooth for install of distributor is more tricky.
The difference os $50 for HEI Distributor, SBF Small Block Ford, 289/302, Blue
and $400 for Marine .
Does anyone know of other issues and problems with this distributor?

Roy,
The vacuum advance is the problem. With a marine engines load curve, the vacuum isn't correct for the needed advance.

I could probably come up with a couple more reasons

First would be that the father of the guy who runs the CCF site shouldn't be trying to blow himself up with a non marine distributor. It would hurt you and be bad PR for Keith

Another is that most if not all the 50 ish dollar Chinese HEI distributors for a 302 have an odd gear size and a 2 piece shaft (The 2 piece shaft is actually pretty convenient)

Your 302 RR gear is 0.467 inches where the gear seats and the Chinese HEI is 0.490 so it would need drilling out to fit the shaft

Another is the lack of spark protection because where the vacuum advance mechanism penetrates the distributor housing there's a hole so if you get gas vapor in the right concentration meeting up with sparks in the distributor you have an explosion

The link below is from Nautiquehunter modifying a LH rotating Chinese HEI to at least in his mind meet USCG requirements.

They don't have more than about 20 degrees of mechanical advance on top of the initial setting of say 10 or so. (but that could be changed)

The DUI marine distributor for a 302 has about 24 degrees plus whatever you set the initial at.

I guess it all depends what you're comfortable with in your own mind.

You see plenty of pictures here on CCF of auto distributors with that vacuum advance canister hanging off the housing, being used knowingly or unknowingly and they haven't blown up yet, but it just takes one bad day to change all that

Are you having problems with the original distributor or just doing a little thinking about an HEI setup?

Just don't like paying $45 every year for a distributor cap and thought the HEI might be better.

Hi Roy

Can't blame you for thinking that

Seems kinda excessive both the yearly replacement and the price.

Is this a Prestolite distributor .

Is it just the cap or are the points and condenser if that's what you have under the cap getting replaced that often too?
