Mehh..
I love seeing these guys scab together and fix stuff decades old like it was a barn kept Buick. Boggles my mind as a salt water guy.
This is the only boat place I visit that corrosion related failure isn't the #1 topic. And that I find extremely refreshing.
Wait... did he just say he fixed an exhaust manifold? Noo waaayyyy!! This guy is NUTS!
Pure entertainment for me.
Ohh and the professor deserves his own thread.
Jesus was a bare-footer.............

Why not just say there are a lot of knowledgeable people here on the site with a mix of personalities and that keeps things interesting?.

You can try to name people but the list is never complete.

Myself I think that Australian guy Lewy is as good with a GT40 as anybody

And every now and then a new or relatively new guy comes up with some really enlightening information that makes you say Wow

The number of posts you have means nothing really, so you new guys shouldn't be afraid to post 'cause you might get questioned

We were all that new guy once

And for Pete's sake .................QUIT USING ME AND PETE IN THE SAME SENTENCE

He's better looking, smarter, has sexier legs although they are a little boney and wears a monogrammed shirt much better than I do

I'm developing a complex

Things we used to see on here and enjoyed seeing or learning from, but dont show up any more. That part is too bad. Again, just an observation. I guess time passes. Kind of sad to have to go over to Facebook   (not my favorite retreat) CC page to get some of that banter back. Plus, over at the FB CC page, although the posters know an awful lot, most of it is cringe-worthy wrong.

Speaking only for myself some conversation has moved out of forums and into text messages/facebooks/instagramers or whatever because of changing technologies and ease of posting/sharing photos from mobile devices.   While photos continue to get easier to take and share from mobile devices the opposite has happened on forums. The failure of hosting companies like photo bucket from monetizing photos posted on forums has lead this forum and most others to need to upload what are smaller sized , edited photos from something like a computer. I am certainly not gonna spend the extra time to upload a lessor quality photo most of the time, and frankly I aint even got one of them there computer thingys so if I can't post a high quality pic directly from my phone it aint gonna happen.. Posts without pictures just don't attract the daily traffic. Of course instagram or facebook is no place to get a real answer - anytime I have answered someones question on one of those forums 102 people chime in to give a somewhat lesser researched opinion.

Also we have already settled some of the early mysteries of these boats that used to fuel conversations that lasted entire off seasons with no definitive conclusion until it came time show up and run what ya brung... now the same question comes up and it is pretty easily answered with a link to an earlier thread.

Larry makes great points. Still, this site has been a ton of fun and the go-to for info for a long time, far longer than most sites. As for FB, I'm not on it, not joining, and so will miss out on that banter, oh well.

Guys like Pete and Keno and Joe and Tim etc. make sites like this go, people know they can get their problems solved. A diesel site I'm on has a few like them, without the trusted knowledge you don't know who to believe. I know if someone suggests I lap my prop in with a body grinder that Pete will jump in to tell me not to, Ken will back him up, and Jbear will ask what a prop is.

It's becoming intuitively obvious to even the most casual observer that you are a rookie here who doesn't have clue how to search on the site or what you're talking about

Anybody that's been around here a while knows we're the Odd Couple aka Lemmon and Matthau.

Do a search and you'll find some pictures

There's one of Pete flogging me with a fish.

I too enjoy all the info shared by KENO and Pete. Not that I understand any of it...but I sure like how they say it.

Over the years....and I have been on here as long or longer than most....I have found most of the friends I hang out with.....visit...entertain in our home...ski with......do favors for such as pick up boats or trailers.

Larry......you said it so well...

I miss 79 at times. He was a lot of fun in person.

I cant imagine where I would be without the friends made here...

Ken and Pete are great assets to this site. Ken helped me keep the Tique going on multiple occasions, through guidance and even some parts donations to the cause, always much appreciated. Pete is equally knowledgable, tho you have to pass his screening questionnaire to get his support. Questions typically include:

Why do you want to do that?
How do you know its broken?
Why did you buy one of those?
Why did you do that?
Did you check it with your VOM?
Why dont you fix it yourself?
Why dont you just chuck it up in the lathe and make a new one? (distributor, propeller, shaft, headlights, engine mounts.....) Kudos to him for being able to do that, but some of us fall short in that department.

If you can answer those to his satisfaction, he is happy to help. If you fail to answer his question, he will copy and paste it into fresh posts until you do.

On a related topic, I was talking to another long timer at Gregs back in October, who was sort of musing on how the character of the site has changed over the years. I guess that is likely to happen after as many as 15 years, which is how long I and some others have been around. On the upside, 15 years is a long time. Survived longer and a whole lot more successfully than Myspace or the HotBot or Jeeves search engines. That longevity is attributable to a great webmaster (Keith) who has kept it going and great people who have become friends on line and in person. I just retold the story at Gregs how several years ago I told my wife an on-line friend (JBear) and 3 complete strangers I have never met before (Scott and Gene Monahan and Bill Berry) are coming to spend the night at our house. That common bond of loving these old boats and a passing but not extreme/too intense interest in watersports has kept it going.

On the downside, through the years, it may have come to feel a little bit like high school and got a little clique-y. Remember table 1 in the cafeteria, the one where the cool kids sat. Back in the day, they got in there and mixed it up with the rest of us. These days, doesnt seem like quite so much. Just an observation. But it seems a lot goes on "behind the scenes" these days.

The hard part was the ceremony where you drank your dolphins and got them pinned to your chest.

The ceremony changed in later years at least officially

To you and all those who serve in uniform -- THANK YOU for your service.
(A special "shout out" to my son, Lieutenant Davidson, USAF)

I have an uncle who served on a diesel boat and then on a boomer. After his stories, I have all the respect in the world for those who earned their "dolphins".

Ken's a retired ex military assassin in the WitLess protection program as Gary mentioned it'as a good thing for some of you guys that I'm retired

Well what i really did was split atoms, boil water and make electricity along with some nuclear waste.

Made propellers turn in the Navy with some of that steam and liked it so much I got out and got a job in civilian nuclear power. (OK the money was good too)

It was pretty enjoyable but when I could retire, I thought that retirement would be more enjoyable.................turns out I was right.

As far as boats, I'm just one of them there Hobbyists, I usually work in the back yard under a shady tree

An old CC dealer turned me into the mad man that I am now when it went to him for a tune up after I got the boat, that I figured I might learn something from. I learned that it would never go back to the dealer 'cause I could screw it up as easily as he did, without having to pay extra for him to do it.

A good friend who grew up with engines who taught me a lot about things like carburetors and distributors and things just progressed from there

The picture below is what I'm striving to be able to accomplish in the back yard when my trees get taller

Ken is not his real name. You won't find any pictures of him or see him at an event. The government spent alot of your tax dollars placing him in the witness protection program so they are not about to start all over

Pete is a schooled and practiced engineer who also worked at a CC dealer.

Ken is still mystery. I don’t know anyone who’s met him from here in person. Maybe he’s Pete’s good guy alter ego? Pete’s been to several events and is well known on the pro tubing circuit.

I do like Ken’s ‘sparky’ comments too.

Yeah I'm still in the shut up and let the adults talk about stuff phase of boat/ engine knowledge.

Most cases there's no need for me to insert my inexperience and naivety into these discussions.

So thanks to all those guys for dropping knowledge that I can lurk and mine for gold when I need it.
