My insurance with Ski Safe just came in. I am looking at $440. this year. I do carry high coverages but that seems like a lot for a 1995 Ski Nautique?
This boat is now 24 years old. Do you guys pay similar rates or is this in line with todays market. Thanks, and yes I just paid it so I should have asked a couple weeks ago while there was time to move if necessary. ![]() Mark |

Heard Ski Safe just increased rates across the board.
Sounds like time to shop it. |

I think Quinner gets his info from that other site with a bunch of what's he call them, "Thirf Boats" ![]() link And........MrMcD After reading your stories about various different incidents with your boats over the years, I hope you're making use of that insurance |

I have Progressive and I pay about the same for my 1994. I do have a stipulated loss value for the vessel in case of a total loss.

I have a stipulated value also but they limited it to $13,000. I could not talk them in to any more value even though it is in nice condition with low hours. I see them sell for more but the insurance does not care.
Ken, I have had exactly one loss on my boat insurance in 35 years, it was 4 years back now. |

We insure our jet boat with Ski Safe. We have an agreed upon value of $25K with a $500 deductible and we pay $485/year for inshore fresh and salt usage, road side assistance and sea-tow reimbursement,. They've always been the cheapest when we've shopped around.

I was with Ski Safe for awhile but then they irritated me for some reason, there’s a flipping shocker. Maybe too hard to communicate with? I know I was paying about $430 a year. This year I moved all toys to Progressive. I know they were a few dollars less than Ski Safe but I can’t quite remember how much. My records show I paid 300-330 this year for my 93. That just seems too low but I broke payments up to 2 payments in 2 months for the entire year and the one payment was 175 for certain. This year I have agreed upon value set at maybe 10k or 12k, the lowest I’ve ever set but I have medical and liability and out of work reimbursement set to the highest limit. In my fragile old age the boat means less but having two legs and a neck means more.

Ken, nice detective work however Thirf Boats yes, also Ballast Ships and let us not forget the Thirf Fairies in tow, lmao
On the subject, some insurance Co's will not do agreed value on older vessels. In my experience rates tend to stay low after the boat is a couple years old and then can creep up as they age, the actuaries seem to believe older vessels are more likely to have issues, such as sinking and that sort or thing, hence the higher premium. Kind of like our health care premiums as we age ![]() |

Our fleet (less the Chris Craft is through Progressive). Progressive was not interested in insuring the Chris Craft so it is through Ski Safe

We use several companies. They're all over the place on price and whether they'll offer coverage. We have the old boats through Progressive as Skisafe won't insure them. Greg, funny how they insured your Chris Craft. Did you get the policy a long time ago?

Mine is 6-something for 2 boats, the 2000 and 2016 SN. 500K/500K. Agreed upon value for the 2000 and a very high value for the 2016 that I'm not going to argue with for sure. Foremost via Farmers.

Stating premium cost without describing liability limits, comprehensive coverage, deductible amount etc is mostly useless.
That said, the amounts I’m seeing posted here still sound very high. I have used many of the companies referenced above (ski safe, progressive, global, Ace, etc) and never had a claim but would encourage everyone to check out Hagerty. They’re affiliated with the ACBS and are familiar with older boats and inboard ski boats (as well as classic cars etc). They can write agreed upon (not “stated”) value at any amount you’d like. The worst feedback I could find on them was Petes claim that an adjuster once walked across some mahogany brightwork with sandy sneakers. ![]() |

Unless you raise the minimums it's all pretty much the same coverage for comparable value boats.
'92 Hull and equipment agreed value - 10K Towing - 250 Liability - 300k Fuel spill - 939,800 Medical - 10k Trailer agreed value - 1k Uninsured boater - 300k '89 same except Hull and equipment agreed value - 6,500 Trailer - 1500 And apparently my deductible has diminished to $0 I have also had two claims. One boat repair for $7k. One medical for a skier with a snapped femur. |

I would encourage everyone to NOT check out Hagerty. They are notorious for not making good on claims. I hear this all the time. The "affiliation" with the ACBS is they simply donate funds and attend many of the shows. There is NO affiliation. |

I have my Mustang with Progressive. $6000 agreed value, maxed out liability limits, $1000 deductible, about $140/yr. I have my modern cars, motorcycles, homeowners, and snowmobiles with Progressive as well so I get a multi-policy discount.
I have two older cars with Hagerty and their service has been excellent, although I haven't had to make a claim. I'll shop my boat policy with them before I pay Progressive for next year. I didn't realize that Hagerty covered boats. Thanks for the tip, Tim. |

We learned the hard way when a Deer jumps out in front of your car while towing a trailer, hit the deer. If you hit the deer it is an act of God and fully covered no fault. In my case I did not hit the deer but did hit my other car my son was driving. That is an at fault accident.
My coverage is as follows and now with my higher premium I see some of the coverage has lowered. Boat value: 12.000 Trailer: $750 Machinery: ??: $ 3,000 Deductable: $1,000 Liability: 500,000 Medical: 25,000 Uninsured Boater Liability: 500,000 Personal Property: None It lists Horsepower at 310 I wonder if that rating costs more? This is with Ski Safe, says Ancient Mariner Policy |

Horsepower effects premium mostly. Next is region. Warmer regions have higher premiums because they figure us folks who use our boats year round and therefore acquire more experience are more likely to have an incident than Yankees who use their boats 3 months a year.
And always hit the deer! Had a lady friend swerve from a deer, lost car and life flight and it cost her $150k out of pocket even though she had auto and medical insurance. |

Hollywood that is mean posting that old post of my wreck!
I guess I deserve my premium. That wreck was no fun to live through and the part that was the hardest is it was my fault. My son could have moved the car forward to avoid the hit but my wife who was in my other car with my son ordered him not to. If I could have had 3 or 4 more feet certainly less than 10' there would have been no cantact. There was a little fawn standing right in front of his bumper, part of 4 or 5 deer that jumped out in front of him, the deer moved but that fawn stayed put. I was crushed since this boat had zero damage at all when I bought it, at least cosmetically it was perfect, I had just fixed the mechanicals and then wrecked it. The boat would have had zero damage if the trailer straps had not failed letting it slip forward. I later added the stop chains that are now mounted on that trailer. Looking back I think the boat came forward on the trailer when I hit the brakes not when I hit my Tahoe, Wet bunks, downhill 50 MPH, stood on the brakes. That probably did it. ![]() EDIT: I just went back to read that horror story, my wife did get the blame but my 30 year old son was actually driving my Tahoe and my wife was his co pilot on that voyage. She was the one that would not allow him to move forward with the fawn there. He would have moved forward. Probably why I did the name switch at the time. |

So I guess the moral of the story is that if you're gonna tell a story more than once, you should review the original story before telling the story again otherwise you have to come up with a new story about why the stories don't agree with each other
