Hi all,

Been off the forum for a while as my boat has languished in storage versus being on the water....and I've spent most of my time up in the air flying. Life has been too busy.

I'm looking for someone who has a 1989-1992 Sport Nautique handy who can take a measurement for me.

I'm looking for the distance between the center of the aft (transom) drain plug and the edge of the exhaust to the right of it. (A measurement from the center of the drain plug to the left edge of the exhaust, closest to plug.) Trying to determine how much space there is there.

A photo of the drain plug and exhaust area would be very helpful.

My boat is about 2 hours away and am trying to avoid driving for 4 hours to take measurements.

Thanks much!

That's a fantastic looking rig you got there. I'm hoping to make a color matched bimini for my Sport as well this summer.

Sorry I can't help with the measurements.... different gen

I don't know how accurate you need this measurement to be or for what purpose you need it, but I can tell you that it could vary from boat to boat. It's not considered to be a critical measurement, like for instance, the location of the hole that the shaft goes through. From watching the guys in the factory cut those holes,, I'm guessing it could easily vary by half an inch. How do I know this? I worked there nearly 50 years.

back in the early 90s that would be expected... but you would think there would be templates in this day in age to ensure consistency right?

I would think they would now as well,I think it 's benefits would be obviously accuracy but it would speed up the process as well. I recently watched a video of a car being built just like my wife's. The model name plate on the hatch had a template to locate it

Yes, they do use templates. Sometimes the guy holding the template is still sleepy. No, truthfully they do screw the templates onto a spot that is going to be cut out. There are steel inserts in the templates. After thousands of drill bits go through the steel guides, they do get worn. Location of an exhaust port is not very critical.

Gotcha. Thanks for the input. I appreciate it! I bet you have some stories to tell. My Mom went to a Florida boarding school and got to know the Meloons quite well. I believe it was Walt who was her classmate. The Meloons would host many get-togethers at their home for kids like my Mom whose parents were overseas missionaries. She has nothing but good to say about them.

Back to my boat...a measurement, if available, would still give me the general “wag” that I need.....if anyone is out there with their boat nearby.

Interesting! Must have been Hampden- Dubose Academy in Zellwood. A former girlfriend of mine, who now is about 72-74 years old, attended there as well. Her name is Margie Grinnell. I am still touch with her. Wouldn't it be a gas if she and your Mom knew each other! I worked for Walt Meloon Jr. (age now low 80s) for 38 years at his CC distribution center until I transferred to the factory. CC provided HDA with a Ski Nautique for the summer each year, and sent me there occasionally for repairs and service to the boat. I went to high school at a similar school;; Montverde School in Montverde, FL. We played HDA in basketball occasionally.

I have a neighbor who has a SPN, it is hanging in his boat lift a couple doors from me. I don't know what year it is, but I'm pretty sure it is an early '90s. I will try to get in touch with him. I think he has a canoe, which we could use to get to the back of the boat to take the measurement.

Margie is my down the street neighbor and she might not know it but one of the two ski courses on the lake is named after her as its in her backyard. And her son Jim is my next door neighbor.

Yes! That's it! My Mom was born and raised in Gabon, Africa and left there to attend Hampton Dubose. She met my Dad there. He was a MK from Indonesia. My mom was Mrs. Dubose personal slave, er, uh...."assistant". LOL. It was a very hard and lonely time for her and the Meloons were the "home" that she had to go to. She's always been very thankful for, and fond of, them and their love & hospitality.

I'll ask her if she knew Margie!

Thanks for your help in getting a measurement. The reason I'm doing this is because I've bought an underwater light that goes in the place of the boat plug. There is a place called boatpluglight.com that makes some really great LED underwater lighting for boats. You can either screw one into the drain plug (which can either be removed for draining OR there is a "new" drain built into the unit) or, in my case, they make a unit where you just remove the drain flange altogether and mount the light using the oem holes. It incorporates a new threaded drain hole in the middle that you can use to drain the hull. The one I bought incorporates two 8000 lumen LED's, one on each side of the threaded plug, I'm now thinking I may not have the clearance for the light on the side of the exhaust. Thus my asking for measurements.

I know there are some purists out there who would say "nooooooo!". I've generally been one of them. But in this case it's a fully reversable deal, which can be completely removed and returned to stock...just remove and replace the OEM flange. In the meantime, it will be kinda fun. 16,000 lumens worth. lol

What a small world it is out there! If you happen to speak with her, please tell her about our knowing each other. I see Jim occasionally at the welding supply where he works.. I'm assuming he is still there; I haven't been in there in quite a while.

Don't sweat it Dave

Pete's got one of those on his Tique.

He uses it for nighttime tubing

It makes it easier to see the tube when he's hopping off the platform and as an added bonus he can see the wake better as he's getting whipped across it

He could probably tell you some more good things about it too

Art. is Grinnell Margie's maiden name?[/QUOTE]

Yes, it is. Her name was Daugerty while she was married to Jim's father.
Her father's name was Charles "Charlie' Grinnell. His wife's name was Hilda, Margies' mother. There are two sons also, Charlie and John. When Charlie Sr. came home from WW2 he bought some acreage on the Lake Apopka muck and started a radish farm. When he retired, his son Charlie took over the farm and continued with radishes until sometime in the early '90s when the State bought out all of the muck farms in an effort to clean up Lake Apopka.

For those of you who know the area, Margie sometimes says she was born in the town of Plywood, which is halfway between PLYmouth and ZellWOOD/.

That’s really neat Art. I learned a lot just now about our little neck of the woods Tangerine, FL and it’s history. There’s a few unconnected dots you just connected. Good thread jack!

Art, My Mom says she recognizes the name but she did the math and said that Margie would have come in AFTER my Mom, who is now 82. Not sure why the name rings a bell for her but it does. Anyway, small world, regardless!

Thanks!! Any chance you can post a pic? The seller is asking for a photo to arrange for an exchange for another unit.

Perfect! That’s exactly what I need. The Titan 2 ain’t gonna work. Looks like a Titan 1 will be the one. (8000 vs. 16,000 lumens. Still plenty bright).
