1956 Atom is getting a full electrical restoration. Now looking at replacing the dash lighting. Any recommendations on venders for the vintage light harness, staying w/ original switch and 6volt system (in the hopes of "keeping it original". Or, options I can run off my 12v battery (set up for bilge pump)

John,
Why the 12 volt conversion? For a bilge pump? Do you know 6 volt bilge pumps are available? BTW a plywood hull should not leak. The only water you should get in the bilge is from the drips of the shaft stuffing box. |

Not a 12volt conversion Pete. I am still running the 6volt system. Past summer was the first time she had been in the water since 1975 and I was a little cautious. I just added a separate bilge system of a 12v in the event the engine went out on me in the middle of the lake. (which did happen when attempting to set the timing)
So, "keeping it original" Any thoughts on the lights? |

John,
Why not keep the lights on the 6 volt and only have the 12 volt battery for the bilge pump? Do you have leaks in the hull? Again, 6 volts pumps are available. |

I hope to keep the lights on the 6v with original switch. Just need to rewire and looking for options on finding the connector base at the end of the run.

John,
I don't feel you will have any luck finding the bayonet bulb sockets. I'd suggest cleaning them up and getting some adhesive lined heat shrink tubing around the insulation area that's frayed. |

Maybe they would work for 2 if they fit into the same dia. hole. If won't work on the third (the one with the frayed insulation) because the bulb on the original goes deeper into socket. I feel there wouldn't be enough depth in the panel for the bulb and the reason for the deep socket. Gary good find. You're almost as good as Ken with your searching. |

Pete, good eyes...just for fun...can you guess what instrument the third one (larger frayed one) goes to on my dash?

John,
I think the third bulb goes into the center of a Stewart Warner panel lighting the tach. The other two are on the lower sides lighting amps, temp and oil pressure. I can't find my SW catalog plus my memory has failed me so I don't know the specific panel name. Did you get the oil out of the dash? |

You are correct on the smaller two lights, the larger one plugs into the back of the clock.
Still working on the dash, will post when finished. |

Pete, after further review...I believe the clock was perhaps not original, as I do not see it listed in the original sales brochure. You are correct with the other two lights "other two are on the lower sides lighting amps, temp and oil pressure"
Thanks for playing the "guess that dash gauge" game! |
