    Posted: April-29-2020 at 2:55am
During my maintenence lockdown I decided to check the shaft alignment and found that it was way out, on closer inspection the strut was twisted and the strut bearings were close to failure. Given that I live in Australia and parts are tough to come by, I thought I would post what I could source for others, and ask the age old question, what prop should I get.

I have the OEM shaft coupling and it was just not moving, even heating the coupling (very carfully) didn't help. in the end we cut the shaft, the shaft was bent anyway, however, the prop was not in great shape and the shaft was the wrong taper for the US Acme props so a new shaft and propeller it is.

Shafts are easy to come by in Australia but they come in Morse, or SAE taper. We have alot of prop maufacurers that make Morse tapered props, and as I understand it, ACME props are SAE, (this is a bit confusing to work out and different suppliers have told me different things so correct me if i am wrong), but be warned, alot of Australian props have a different taper to USA made props. you can buy a taper adaptor (not reccomended). However, no-one produces the A.R.E drive shaft and coupling, you can get them for a 1 1/8 inch wake boat shaft but not 1 inch.

A new s-19 strut cannot be sourced in Australia (at least I could not find one) there are generic struts that are close, but not the same bolt pattern, and who knows whether the tube is at the same degrees I think its 15degrees) and height. Nautique Central in Brisbane have about 20 struts laying around, but not the correct one, but call them and Sam will check for you if you need a strut. A few guys said they would have a go straightening it, but no gaurntee on how straight it will be. decided to go new.

Given the trouble with removing the coupling I decided to go with the A.R.E shaft. we measured my existing shaft and came to 48 inches, Can anyone confirm this measurement (1994 SNOB) as I think the shaft was a bit long, and it is now in bits.

Parts are tough to come by in Australia, Nautique Parts are my go-to supplier but they dont have the correct shaft length in ARE for my boat. They have the Strut (freight and exchange rate are killing me). I found other suppliers in the US, but are yet to here back from them regarding freight costs (Nautique Parts lets you order and pay for international freight online, not cheap but convenient)

Nautique Central in Brisbane are hooking me up with an A.R.E tapered shaft as it was all too hard trying to source the shaft from the US.

It looks like insurance is going to cover it, which is good news.

Question 1 -

1994 SNOB Shaft Length - can anyone confirm that 48 inches is the correct size, ours looked a bit long, the shaft was past the coupling and close to the rudder but it worked.

Question 2 -

Prop - our local Prop shop reccomends these props

1994~1996 Ski Nautique

Water Skiing / Barefoot      ACME 422
Recreational / All-Round   ACME 654
Wakeboard / Surf               ACME 480

We have no interest in surfing yet, ski at 34 MPH, wakeboard between 17 ans 23 MPH and sometimes get out on the barefoot bar. Therefore I am leaning towards the 654.

I am currently running an AUSTRAL 3 blade prop - 14/16 that I am happy with it but have never tried another prop so don't have any comparison. It does have some issues holding speed at wakeboard speed 18-23mph but not much of an issue for perfect pass. I get about 43MPH at 5000rpm which is plenty fast enough for us, but I never run it past 36mph except to check out the preformance occasionally.

I can keep the prop, but I will need a different shaft taper that wont fit the ACME props and therefore it is worthwhile upgrading now. Not sure if there is any comparitive prop to the one I am running so it could cause a headace in the future.

Question 3 - have I made the right decsion moving to an A.R.E shaft?

PS, I think I have read all the threads on strut, shaft alignment, removal and replacement, and some on props. all very helpful.

I have a 1994 SNOB also. I recently installed a new A.R.E. double-taper shaft. I purchased it from www.skidim.com. I called first and spoke with Vince and he told me that I need a drive-line/drive-shaft length of 46 7/8 inches.

I like the A.R.E. shaft. Others have had good results from GeneralPropeller.com in Florida.

I would look at the 3 blade 470 as well as the 654 4 blade. But my preference is still the 422.
What engine do you have in the 94 SNOB ?
You will love any of the ACME's `compared to the Austral 3 blade
The Austral CompuSki range was a big improvement over all the other Australian made props.
If you're going through hell, keep going

Thank you for the advice.

I am running a PLP model 351. 285HP carbed with a Mallory breakerless distributor, 1:23:1 PCM transmission.

Just worked this out after finding the 1995 engine manual in the reference section and working out my motor serial number.

The previous owner said that he did experiment with a 422 and found it hard to hold speeds at 18 to 20 MPH. I have Perfect pass now, so not as much of an issue, but that is why I was leaning towards a 654...… we do a lot of wakeboarding with the kids, but they are skiing now and want to barefoot, and I am a ski tragic. However, I am not adverse to the 422, why do you like it so much, and do you have a similar engine setup to me?

I have also discovered that all my engine mount bushes need replacing. The part number for the bracket is R092011. suppose they are a US sourced part, Skimdim has a similar part number, but not the same:

REAR MOUNT/TRUNNION ASSY PCM 1.23:1
PCM 1.23:1 Trans thru 1997, 1998 and up use RA092011A (short trunnion).

I think I need

ISOLATOR REAR MOUNT (TOP)
PCM (ALL), Height 15/16", O.D. 1-1/8", 5/8" Bore.

ISOLATOR REAR MOUNT PCM LOWER
Height 1-5/8", Big end 1-31/32" O.D., Small end 1-11/32" O.D., 5/8 Bore.

ISOLATOR PCM FRONT MOUNT
Height 2", Big end 2-1/2" O.D., Small end 1-5/8" O.D., bore 5/8".

RETAINING RING REAR TRUN STUD
Clip for PCM rear isolater mount bushing.

That is, unless I can source them in Australia?

I thought I would provide an update,

Firstly, I cant believe this project is still going.

1. Prop Shaft was supplied from an Australian supplier, couldn't bring myself to pay the freight to get an ARE Shaft. Shaft delivered with the wrong prop taper, they agreed to swap it out for the correct one, still awaiting delivery.

2. Waited a month for engine mount isolators from Skidim. I only took apart one isolator before I placed the order and when I tried to free up the other it would not budge, even an engineering shop could not move the trunnion..... Getting a trunnion shaft made up here as I don't want to wait for another month or so for it to arrive. SkiDim replied to an email today saying that they would Fed Ex parts, I just needed to stipulate that in the comments section, so i ordered the correct parts today and will swap out the fabricated parts when they arrive (or keep them as spares).

3. been able to tackle some other maintenance, repainted and fitted new gasket to exhaust manifold, new spark plug leads,

4. Went with a 422 ACME Prop, Can't wait to try it when the shaft arrives.

The boat is back from the upholsterers and happy with the results

I have a road cover for the boat, but needed a cover that was waterproof while the boat was away from the lake, and when we leave the boat on the lake overnight., I bought a cheap $160 AUD cover off ebay and was pleasantly surprised with the quality. Granted it is no a high quality cover, but it is waterproof, fits fine and didn't cost an arm and a leg. It has not let any water in yet, and will be a very good dust cover in the shed in any event.
