Pertronix conversion question

Installed pertronics electronic ignition conversion on 82 351w last week. Very easy install. Boat starts up a little slowly. Once it was running I put timing light on and set to 10 degrees btdc. It runs great, great response up to 40 mph. But after I turn it off and restart it’s a little slow to start. Should I be timing that engine differently with the conversion? With points it seems that when boat was timed perfectly, if you barely touch the key it would fire right up.

Tom,
Setting the timing is the same as with a point set.

I'd put the points back in! Why did you do the EI conversion?

Tom,
When you say it "starts up a little slowly", do you mean it cranks slow or takes more cranking before the engine fires up?

Pete you know what I did? Exact what I learned on this site to not do. Throw money at parts instead of finding the problem. Ive gotten very familiar with a multi meter in the past two years and what voltages should be where on this engine. And I’m tired of replacing condensers, points, coils and voltage regulators that don’t have 20 hours on them. Some of these parts regularly arrive non functioning. And I haven’t been buying them from a local auto parts store. So I’mm h h ping to give this conversion a shot for a month or two and see.

No it cranks fine it just takes a couple turns to fire. Don’t worry I kept the points and everything in a ziplock bag because I’ve heard that these conversions fail also!

Good it cranks fine. The reason I asked is a slow crank indicates a possible timing problem.

So Pete.............why do you tell people to stick with points but you still have that electronic module in your Tique.?

Is this an Ignitor or an Ignitor 2 that you installed?

The Ignitor 2 seems a little sensitive to voltage supplied to it while starting the engine. If it's low they crank a little longer. If it's low enough (8 volts) it won't fire at all.

How is it wired? I imagine you've bypassed or removed the ballast resistor

What's the voltage going to the coil/module while cranking the engine before it starts?

I didn't ask why you told Tom to stick with points, I asked why you tell people (pretty much anybody who says they swapped or are thinking of swapping) that they should stick with points, but you have an electronic setup in the Tique

There must be a reason you don't swap back.

I guess you're just that "do as I say, not as I do" type

Pertronix recommends NO ballast resistor and use there flame thrower coil has proper ohms
You could see if your coil has same ohms as flame thrower
I did full billet body conversion. Works fine

And did you read and follow the installation instructions? I don’t remember if it’s points or certain EI modules that get full voltage during cranking only, then a resisted supply while running.
