Looking for some help! I'm not real sure where I went wrong on my prop shaft and hub assembly process. I removed the hub and prop shaft to replace my strut bearing. After following the process that I found on the forum, I can slide my hub on the shaft by hand. The following is the process I used:
1. Removed the hub using a 4 bolt hub puller. 2. Cleaned the shaft and hub and checked the shaft for straightness. 3. Heated the hub in an oven to 500 degrees and installed. 4. Let cool overnight and when I checked it this morning, I could slide it on and off by hand. The only thing that I can think of that I used differently was I did clean the inside of the hub and the shaft with soap and water and a scotchbrite pad. Would this have removed enough material to make it this loose. I didn't think I was getting too aggressive with it. Thanks for any insight. Jason |

Jason,
I suspect that ether the shaft and coupling have fretted due to misalignment or at one time someone installed a coupling that wasn't matched to the shaft for an interference fit. Do you have anything to measure the ID and OD's? It should be .0000" to a -negative.0005" difference. |

One more, what was the soap and water for? Were you removing a blackish residue on the bore of the coupling and on the shaft were it was on the coupling?

Yes, there was a brownish residue on the shaft and inside the coupling. Looked similar to a rust material which I thought was odd, Neither material should rust. I checked the alignment when I disconnected the hub before removal and it was true on all four sides of the coupling.

Measurements are not good at all.
Coupling tail ID: 1.02" Coupling face ID: 1.0" Shaft OD: .99" Looks like a new shaft and coupling are needed. |

The .difference in the bore of the coupling from the front to the back is sure an indicator that there was a misalignment problem. You said you got good measurements between the coupling faces when you unbolted the halves but tell us more. There is an option of saving the shaft and just using a spit coupling half. I'll dig up a link and post it. General Propeller is a good source. |

Here's a link to GP's split couplings They are very easy to deal with and I feel the best to go to for any shafting components. Call them up and tell them you measured the shaft at .99" They will also need the OD of the coupling.and the OD of the coupling pilot on the face.
GP is also an excellent source for a double taper shaft. (taper for the prop and taper for the coupling half) |

Should really measure the current shaft in an unworn spot as well just to check.

After tossing the dial caliper and using a micrometer, the measurements of the shaft are as follows:
Coupling end of the shaft: .9759 Actual shaft: .9760 |
