I bought the original Al Tyll Skier from Al at his home on Bantam Lake, CT. and towed it to it's new home on Occoquan Creek, VA. It was a great boat for tricking but I was a slalom skier and it had a wake like a brick wall! Al had equipped it with hydraulically operated trim tabs. While they smoothed out the wake somewhat for slalom. they produced large balls of water which made life a bit unpleasant! The other con was that the driver sat on the port side which the boat a bit odd when compared to others. After a year, I traded the Tyll Skier in on the first of the 6 Nautiques I owned during my skiing career

John,
What engine was in the boat? Sounds like the engine was a standard rotation rather than a reverse. A port helm would then be the normal for the standard rotation.

John, Your message brings back memories. My brother Todd and I went with our Dad to test drive Al's boat on Bantam Lake. I believe that was in 1967. What year did you get his boat? If my memory is correct the one we drove had a 318. My dad ended up buying a 1968 Mustang the following year from Ed Barrett in Winsted.

Forgot to mention that,I think it was standard rotation. It was the standard rotation. It was the blue Buick Revley enginde with the on board fresh water cooling system.

Hi Ed,

I really don't recall the year, but that sounds right. The Nautique I replaced it with had the Chrysler 318.

Those Revley Buicks sure were a great engine back in the days. With the aluminum heads and other components, the power to weight ratio was impressive for the 60's.

Steve and Val are restoring a Al Tyll Skier and they live on Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia ( Roanoke). The engine was done and the gel has been resprayed. I believe they are getting close to the finish line. It should be a real beauty when done. He restored the original Buick but i believe it is a V-8 if my memory is correct. Screen name Air206. He just had a grand child so the boat might of got sidelined for a while.

Can someone fill me in on what engine the Buick Revley is? I'm not familar with it.

John, welcome to the site and thanks for sharing the story of the Al Tyll. If you have any pictures of the boat it would be great to see them. I have his water ski book and wonder if the boat you bought is one of the ones pictured in the book.

Do you still have a Nautique?

Ok, if I found the right specs, 1964-65 it came out, it was 3.75 bore x 3.40 stroke, surprised it was oversquare. 9.0:1, 210 HP and 310 lb.-ft. with 2 bbl Rochester, or 250 HP and 335 lb.-ft. with 4 bbl Rochester.

I'm always interested in the myriad of engine's they put in these boats!

Interesting that the prototype or original or Al Tyll’s Al Tyll was a left helm, presumably left rotation boat when all the production Al Tylls appear to be right/right.

I probably have some pictures of the Al Tyll Skier somewhere. I didn't take many pictures back then. No I sold the last Nautique many years ago. At age 83, my skiing days are unfortunately done, although I still have a keen interest in Water skiing and Correct Craft boats.

BTW, The Buick Revley was definately a V-8.

John, great to have you on the forum! It's nice to meet you and hear your story. There are certain boats that people are aware of like the Al Tyll or Promo's or Cyprus Gardens boats, not to mention the earliest Ski Nautiques. I really discussion about those old boats and where they ended up, how they were powered.

Interesting that Al installed tabs on the hull, I'm not aware of many CC's that had tabs.

These trim tabs were obviously an after market item. I don't recall the brand but there was a black and chrome label on the control
