THE PLAN:
Motor: Getting pulled. Boat currently has 1100 hrs on it. Ordered a new 351 long block and swapping accessories over. I'll upgrade the ignition, plugs/wires, intake, carb, GT-40 heads, Paint and replace. Dash: Redo to clean up but keep original look. Hull: Decals, windshield, platform removed. Wet sand, paint, new decals. Rub rail pulled and replaced. The key is to spend some money to keep for another 23+ years while maintaining the original look. Our little 600 acre lake has a ton of ski nautiques ranging from the 70's to today. Feel free to give feedback or ideas/dont dos because you have been there :). I do need help with finding dash bezels and retro gauges. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Good luck. Will be watching. There is no paint on your 87. Just gel and decals. I would try buffing with a rotary buffer (not a DA), a wool pad and 3m super duty. May keep you from wet sanding. If not, wet sand then buff etc. You can leave the decals that are in good shape on to buff and replace the bad decals. Just don’t buff the good ones too hard. I was able to do this on my sport with good luck.

Nice project! Curious why you didn't use your current engine? BTW 33 years! Have you owned it since new?

Engine has 1100 hrs on it. I'm wanting a more reliable motor thats turn key. We plan on taking the original core and having some fun with it on another motor/boat project. I plan to keep this boat for a long time and decided, in theory, to make it bullet proof for the next 23+. We have enough folks that turn wrenches that if I'm going all out with the hull project, I'd like to do the motor as well. Seats and floor have been done about 5 years ago, so this is it to complete the boat IMO. We shall see!

Curious. Is that engine a closed system? Looks like reservoir . Also- did a overhead of your lake. Is it a requirement to have a boathouse. Never seen so many in my life.

Feels like I am hanging 10 but in reality - probably hanging 6.

I too was curious and took a look. I didn't see any boathouses. Just lots and lots of covered slips. Wow,

Umm Pete I think you must have some kind of self imagined superpowers to be able to tell what's under all those roofs. Do a little more checking and you might find all kinds of rules and regulations that cover among other things, boathouses on Lake Lotawana, mixed in with your "covered slips" ![]() |

What is the benefit of a 1/2 system ?

I researched before posting. ![]() "Boathouses, defined as an enclosed Boat Dock that includes a roof
and walls, will not be permitted." |

page 28 of the link below. The last paragraph seems to have another sentence after your quote. "Any boathouse permitted prior to 1991 may be kept on the lake but not moved or modified in any way" |

LOL. we have associations to handle the elusive "boathouse" debacle. We can have covered well docks. The closed system was used in salt water applications. I can drain the engine with water in a few simple bolts and hose pulls. Makes it great when I can winterize the boat then come January or February when it hits 60 degree I can take a hot lap. Get back to the dock and winterize in no time. WHY this boat made it to Missouri..... Who knows.

I have been in that lake. My dissertation advisor has/had a house there and I got to house sit every now and then. Great little lake.
You don't need to paint that boat. It just needs to be wet sanded and buffed, and then a good layer of wax needs to be applied annually. That will set it up nicely for the next 35 years. What you are seeing on that boat is a lack of upkeep, not age. Mine is older and spent years in MO too, and it does not look like that. Once you get that oxidation out of that gel, it is easy to keep it up. |
