With all this talk of winter lay-up, I was wondering if anyone has any secrets on trying to make sure mice,or other critters, dont get in your boat during storage. I once saw a pontoon boat that raccoons decided to live in thru the winter NOT a pretty sight).
I do put out packs of poison around the building. I also place mothballs in old butter containers inside the boat ,as well as the bilge area... Anyone have any other suggestions? |

cats...i dont like cats.. cats leave paw prints on my Chevelle hood...I dont like paw prints on the hood of my 70 Chevelle..
cats, i dont like cats.....cats leave paw prints on.... plus , probably not a good thing to leave a cat locked up in a storage unit all winter.... Chuck, actually we used to have "barn" cats around...I always said if they were people , they'd be on welfare.. just plain lazy..and we still had lots of mice... |

I use many poison packs also. Someone told me, a bar of soap in the boat, will keep bugs and spiders away..

Steve,
I was pretty much kidding about the cat, however, we've had one living around our house now for about a year, she just showed up, and no mice in the garage. I did find the little thing sitting on the boat once when the garage door had been left open, that made me nervous. But, I guess she has good taste. We used to have a rat terrier, sort of, more of a sort of than a rat terrier, but anyway he was a good varmit chaser. And, that dog loved to ride in boats. I should have taught him to ski. Chuck |

For some reason cats like to chill on vehicles, one of the many reasons I hate them.
A bunch of kittens had a wrestling match on my buddy's dad's Buick GNX 300. Claws went straight through the cover! |

I've read that insects, bugs, etc. don't like drier sheets. Never tried myself. BKH

I put a bunch of dryer sheets in my boat last winter. No rodent problems to speak of and the interior had a spring fresh scent! |

I heard that several years ago as that was recommended for motorhome/RV storage. You dont get the nasty mothball smell either, that doesnt seem to go away. I have had no rodent issues for 3 years so far with Bounty sheets. Jeff... |

And you thought dryer sheets were also good for just keeping mice out of your boat during the winter:

Stored my boat in my parents barn in Texas for awhile and nothing I did would keep the critters out. I even duct taped the edges of the cover to the hull all the way around to no avail.... until I was told to place a few jars of ammonia in the boat before covering it. just fill a few mason jars (or similar size containers) with ammonia and place them in approx. four different locations throughout the boat and the undesirables stay away. worked like a charm for me.

Peppermint oil will deter rodents...15 years in the restaurant industry (thank God I'm out of it!) convinced me.
Soak cotton balls in peppermint oil and lay in the boat prior to covering. I also place aluminum roasting pans full of kitty litter on the floor - absorbs moisture and odors. |
