Hey All,
Just wanted to introduce myself and my new boat. Just picked up a 1988 Martinique B/R with a PCM 351 yesterday here in SE Michigan. I used quite a few of the threads here when gathering info for my inspection of the boat, and I know more questions will come, so it was time to join. It’s not perfect, definitely needs a little work here and there, but I think she should be cleaned up and lake worthy in no time! Pics will be in post below |

Excellent choice in boats. ;) Hard to beat the old Martinique beasts for hauling the family around a busy lake. We used our '87 Martinique on Fathers Day in SE WI and had 8 people on it. It was tight, but handled it well, and it made for a smooth, and (somewhat) dry ride. What all do you need to do to yours?

To be water worthy, i just need to get it registered and do general tuneup on the engine. Oil and filter change, new plugs, and checking the carb tuning some, as the PO put a new carb on and I just want to confirm the tuning is on. After that's done we'll do the maiden voyage and see if that list grows at all.
Otherwise in general it could use some cleanup, the teak needs some oil to help bring some life back, and i ordered some vinyl patch to use on some of the cushions to try to prevent them from splitting farther. Radio head unit is missing. Cover needs a few patches and a coat of waterproofer to keep it dryer when in my yard. Nothing that really prevents us from going on the water but would greatly help the look of everything. Recovering some of the cushions will likely be a winter project, so i'm trying to make them usable for this season as they aren't too bad just yet, just some splitting near the corners up in the bow and on the rear bench. Hoping to get the tuneup done and out on the water on a less busy weeknight in the next 2 weeks or so. Oh, and the most important part, it seems she's made it 33 years without being named, so i think we need to change that.

By the way, I forgot to mention.... welcome! This site has a bunch of very knowledgeable folks that are glad to help. On timing, I set mine to ~10 Deg BTDC. Just make sure your points, plugs, rotor, and cap are in good shape. They may be fine now. You can use some fine sandpaper to clean the points up if they are still servicable. Just make sure your battery is disconnected before you start messing with points. I have also used a piece of paper or matchbook cardboard to clean the points if any lube spray gets on them and the engine doesn't fire. I have had that happen. Make sure the battery is disconnected. On the teak, I just used a good teak oil on the teak inside the boat. For the platform, I used the Star Brite three step kit (cleaner, brightener, and oil). It really made it pop. Raw water pump impeller. One of the first things I would do would be to put a new raw water pump impeller in. Cheap insurance. New impellor-$40. New motor-$3000+. You can get it from Discount Inboard Marine (Skidim). All the parts you should need for the boat. If you have the 351, it is Sherwood part # 09959K, at least that's what mine take. if you have other questions, just ask.

Thanks, Thats good info! I need to get a vacuum gauge and timing light for the tuneup. Was there already a port on the intake for the nipple or did you have to drill and tap it?
The star brite teak kit is what I was looking at using as well. I will look into the impeller as well as preventative maintenance. Sounds worth the peace of mind for $40 One question, where are the tie downs usually on the rear of the boat? The PO has it kind of wrapped around the swim platform supports with a single ratchet strap. Not sure if Thats correct or there are some tie down points missing? |

On the vacuum port, I think there was a plug in my intake manifold, and I bought a nipple w/ plastic cap to replace it.
Tie downs....I assume you mean for trailering?? That is one short coming of this boat. No tie downs hooks. I use an in/out service, so it doesn't get trailered much. I would look at getting a long strap you throw over boat at the rear and hook it to the trailer. Not the best, but may prevent issues with the law. I guess the platform strap may work as well.

You can also pull the hose that goes from your PCV valve to the spacer plate and put a temporary tee in so that you can read the vacuum. Picture below Or pull the hose off the PCV valve and stick the vacuum gauge in the end with an adapter. There's full manifold vacuum at the spacer plate ![]() |

Sweet find. I have an 87 riviera in the same corner scheme. For trailering I use a long single boat strap over the gunwales hooked to the trailer frame

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. Few questions.
1. Is the best way to run it on a hose one of the suction cup looking things that wedge against the ground? Or do people attach a hose up inside the boat? 2. From what I understand 88 new enough that it is gel coat not painted stripes, is there a way to get matching paint to touch up scratches? Or is the best bet just to buff out what’s there? |

You can do both the Fake A Lake suction cup, or hook the hose directly to a water line on the engine. I normally go straight to the engine hose. The suction cup can be a PIA. The colors are gel. I would buff them out, and get that tank on the water. Don't paint it. Mine has a few battle scars, but it doesn't affect how it runs. Patina is where it's at these days. Might be a good winter project if it really bothers you. Also, a word of advice. Get a bimini top for it. I don't know how we used ours for two years without one. A must have!

What Gary said. The boat could also be built with a closed-bow top deck. |

On the bimini top, I can't remember what the measurements were, but, the first thing to do is find a bimini supplier that has a wide variety of them. They will tell you where to take measurements on the boat. My suggestion is to check several out, and get one as long as possible to cover as much of the cockpit as possible.
There may be some mounts on your windshield side wings for the original CC biminis that came with these boats. I ended up shortening my support posts to get it positioned where I wanted it without having to drill too many holes in the deck. See if there is a local shop you can take it in to to get it fitted properly, and even have them install. I would suggest you get it fitted so you can stand up while driving or to be able to walk from the front to the back of the boat without bumping your head. You can see pictures of mine on my profile picture(s).

Maiden voyage was more or less a success!
The winch on the trailer will be a must have, especially with how high it sits above the ground. Currently has a big ratchet strap and we struggled to get the boat properly positioned on the trailer. Otherwise a slow drip on the propellor seal, didn’t even fill enough to activate the bilge once in two hours or so. Seemed to handle really well, just some remaining little carb tuning issues. At the beginning it ran pretty well, except for a bog near 3/4 throttle. If I pushed past it to WOT it was okay and same if I ran closer to 1/2. Later in the day after some longer idling, it seemed like it was loaded up, didn’t want to rev or get up on plane. If I put it in neutral and revved to 3k or so a few times, then put it back in gear, it mostly cleared up. Thinking idle mixture is too rich so it loaded up and just needed cleared out? Sorry if these are kind of obvious. My previous experience is either with dirt bike/atv carbs or EFI car engines. |

Sounds like a successful maiden voyage
Took me 6 trips to get where you are The launching and loading are not my favorite chores either. Hopefully you have good emergency brakes and tie down strap etc. YouTube ‘launch fails’ lots of trucks in the lake or boats sitting on the ramp Boating is the easy part |

So, that definitely does not appear to be the proper trailer. Some more pictures from the perspective of siting on the ground, at the transom and shooting a pic straight across showing the boat's position on the trailer relative to the running gear would confirm. And also a pic taken from ground level, at the rear of the boat, facing forward...But the obvious is just the proportion of the trailer to the boat size. See my pic of a typical inboard trailer with prop guard. Your packing drip is good. And you're up to speed with tuning that Holley ;-) ![]() |

The trailer is a 1982 correct craft, so it’s definitely not made exactly for the boat. I’ll grab the pictures you mentioned, but I’d tend to agree with you. It works but doesn’t seem ideal

Well, if it’s a CC trailer, you can likely make it work. Might be set up for a much smaller and lighter SN, looking at it dimensionally.
I’ll likely take a look at weights and capacities. A fully loaded up Martinique BR is a beast. |

Yeah, it has a 6 bolt axle which should mean 5k lb rating. The boat plus the trailer and a half tank of gas was 4600 lbs on the cat scale. So figure 4720 with a full tank, plus some extra for other fluids and accessories, and we aren’t over that 5k, but not far from it.
When I got it it had a little dinky 3500lb coupler, but already had the holes in the trailer for a 10k lb coupler with 3 bolts rather than 2. It also had 6 ply rated tires, which I upgraded to 10 plys to handle the weight, but those were slightly bigger in diameter which didn’t help my height issue. It also does not have a prop guard, that is on my list as a possible fall project to add. |

Well, you're on the right track for sure. Don't forget to add in the weight of the trailer
