I think the ship has already sailed on the trim, Gary... It's hard to install after the fact (I'm assuming the floor carpet is already glued down). Just make a nice tight seam when you do the wall carpet, that's how it would have been done in years prior to the trim anyways. I've never tried doing the floors before the walls though- that may be another difficulty!

Pete, the neutral safety switch wires were well labeled and had an eyelet to go onto the two screws. This wire has a blade connector. I'll check the routing again and see if I can decribe it more clearly. Tim,the "keep it original" ship sailed awhile ago. I just need it to look neat. |

Hi Bruce. The boat I took to lake george was the reason This mustang didn't get worked on for a couple of years. I sold it so I could devote some time to this one.

Gary,
It sure has been a long project but some do take time when you have so many other thing going on. I remember when you first started it so it's great to see it in the water. Looking great! What's the other end of the yellow wire attached to? maybe it should be going to the neutral safety switch? |

The tank cleaned up very well. There was a little gunk in the corner under the filler but I was able to get most of it out. I was afraid of corrosion but it looked really good.
Here are a couple of pictures in the water two weekends ago. I gave a friend (the P.O.) a ride and he couldn't stop laughing. He was thrilled to see it back in the water. It's going to look sweet after it's lettered and striped.I'll get some pictures when it's done. |

Everything went together pretty well considering how long it was apart. All the wires went on pretty well except for one yellow wire coming out of the harness with a blade connector that doesn't seem to fit anywhere. The tag was half gone and all I had was the last three letters "ing" .It doesn't reach much past the motor to the front and nothing to the back It's the wire laying on the port side exhaust. |

I'm finally getting around to posting some pictures of my progress on the mustang 17.It's not done by any means but I did get her in the water for some fun before it get too cold. I had the back of the hull on wheel dollies and the front was on the engine hoist. I was able to get it out of my workshop by myself. I then took the wheels off of the trailer so it was low enough to slide it under the boat.Back on the trailer after all this time.. |

Got in a good day at the mustang.I had the floor pieces cut out for a couple of weeks but I was busy working on the seats until I ruined my last sheet of plywood. So today was spent fitting the pieces. Here are a couple of pictures of my progress.
The short secondary stringers are not glassed in yet so the starboard side are not staying where they are in the picture. Now I can coat with smith's penetrating epoxy. Tomorrow I will get another sheet of cdx for the seat bases so I can get all that stuff to the upholstery shop. |

Ok,thanks Pete.I'll pick out some nice pieces at the local lumber yard. We have a couple of small scale lumber mills in town and one of them has a kiln and moisture meter.I'll shoot for 8% or so.I suppose the kiln will warp the boards if they are prone to do so. That will help.I can find out before I cut them. |

Not at all - it's what you had to do to find the Doug Fir in your area. I however do feel that your dads high end staircase background rubbed off on you! That's NOT a bad thing and is certainly evident with your skills!! BTW, I've got to stop at my hardwood lumber again for some more White Oak. I screwed up ripping the 4th spray rail I'm making for my X55! I'm making 2 for mine and 2 for Craig (64X55). Ripped the shape to the narrow dimension of the bevel instead of the wide dimension. I got sloppy on the 4th piece and wasn't paying attention! |

Pete, are you bustin my chops again?
I paid $2.875/bf It is 8/4 select like Pete said but not quarter sawn. It's just regular or plank cut. I wasn't able to hand-pick, but they did let me refuse 1 piece they brought out. |

Gary (and others),
I feel you may be looking too much at the Doug Fir that Greg (buffaloBFN) ended up with! He couldn't find construction grade Fir in his area and had to go "top shelf" with a specialty lumber yard. The Fir he ended up with was 8/4 finish (select) that I'm sure he paid dearly for! (I can't remember if he ever posted his cost on the Fir) It's really overkill. Construction grade is fine as long as they will allow you to hand pick some nice pieces. Don't worry about it being quarter sawn of riff cut as well as it having some heart wood. Look for some fairly straight grain and some small tight knots in the middle are fine. Even some wane is fine because you'll be trimming edges anyway. The biggest concern would be the moisture content. If the yard you're dealing with knows the % great. They may even have a meter to check it out. Out of the yard, it shouldn't be over about 12%. Then, if you can leave it sit for a couple of weeks in a warm dry area, it would be even greater and should take it down to less than 8%. |

Went to my local lumber yard yesterday.Their framing lumber is Doug fir but I couldn't find any that was quarter sawn with no heartwood.I'm going to look around some more before I try to make do with a couple of those. |

Yes that's a good idea.I'll try to size the stringer to fit the fiberglass channel, then clamp it along the sides. |

Chris is absolutely correct. You need to think of resin as the adhesive for the glass. It's really the glass that gives the fiberglass it's strength. |

Farmer - You might want to figure out a way to clamp the walls of of glass to your new stringers. The epoxy is strongest when it is in a thin layer, so you don't want to fill big gaps without filler like mat or cloth.
Maybe have 2x4's on each side & lots of C clamps? Or lots of deck screws! |

Knowing nothing about engineering I would rebuild figuring the wood was most important when I built the stringers and then the bond an glass where most important when I put them in.

That's exactly what I have in mind. There is nothing wrong with fiberglass that's there. If I use epoxy inside with the stringer and one more layer of glass/epoxy over it ,then it should be much less apt to absorb moisture and that much stronger than the original thickness. I will also treat the wood with CPES before installing into the glass channel. |

that boat looks like my skylark with the wood removed from the glass , I took fir fit it in the void you see in that boat I coated everything with epoxy and resin to seal the fir after fitting to the boat, then i mixed a slow set epoxy resin and poured it into the hull brushed it onto the sides of the old, glass . set the new stringers into that and let it set then i used cloth to put new caps on . could that be strong enough and last a while? it seemed to really bond to those walls of glass...Peter
