Need to tighten the shaft packing on my 2002 Ski Nautique GT-40. Got around 600 hrs on the boat- any suggestions or tips. Should I replace the packing or just try to tighten it.

Drawdyskier, Tighten first, if you cant achieve an acceptable drip rate then replace. The Gortex replacement at SkiDim is only about $10 bucks.

Drawdy, has your packing ever been replaced? If not 600 hours is quite a bit of time for the same packing and it has served you well. If it hasn't been replaced (ever) I'd replace it now because the old stuff is surely dried out. You might manage to slow your drip down by tightening the old dry packing but it will soon leak again.

Probably over-kill, but I replace the packing every season. That gore-tex packing is much better than the old wax rope.

Thanks for the info. Will attempt to tighten the packing this weeked for now but will order Gortex replacement from SkiDim. I suspect it needs to be replaced and I am just buying a little time by tightening it
