    Posted: March-08-2007 at 8:34am

I just got the flyer for Jans Fans in the mail today. This will take place at the same time as the MS Walk, 05/06/07. Jans Fans is a team for the Multiple Sclerosis Walk that barefoots instead of walks. I went in 2005 (you can see my goofy pink drysuit in the flyer picture) and had a great time, actually footing while it was snowing that day. I'd like the Chicago guys to consider going this year because-

A) This is a great cause. MS is a horrible disease and this event is the real deal- rather than a wimpy "walk", these guys and gals foot in the cold water which actually replicates some MS symptoms- numb hands and feet, etc. Tom and Janice Hart are the real deal too. Tom is a barefootcentral.com member and a super dooper guy. Jan is extremely nice and is the one with MS- the "Jan" in "Jan's Fans". They've been doing this for years and are one of the top-earning teams in the fight.

B) It's fun. Free food, great people, cool T-Shirts plenty of boats and barefooting for everyone. Extra drysuits and anything you need to foot will be there. Chicago Mastercraft usually provides the boats for the event. Plus, you can tell people you footed for a cool cause in the cold.

Unfortunately, I won't be there this year because I have other obligations on that weekend (hello Kentucky Derby Weekend). However, I will be donating to the cause anyway and I figured this post is the least I can do.

Checked out the site, did not see info on 2007? Do you know if it will be at Potowotomie Park this year?

The site is a bit outdated but IIRC it is in the same place every year. I'll scan in the flyer when I get home.

Sounds like a must do Joel, post updated info when you can. I bet we'd have a pretty good CCF turnout.

Where's HW been lately? He's either on vacation or got himself a real job.

I'm a fan of Jan too! What a great idea for a great cause.
My wife was diagnosed with MS two years ago. Like Jan, her progression has been slow and her condition has not worsened thanks to new drugs. A lot of progress has been made on this disease and there is a lot of hope in the future. Stem cell research could open a lot of doors to finding a cure for this terrible disease.

If I could barefoot, I would love to participate. Instead, we will be participating in the Akron MS walk in April. I encourage everyone that can to help contribute to this great cause.

Thanks for putting this out there Joel.

You don't have to barefoot. These guys will teach you how, if you want to learn, but you can do anything including ski on combos.

I haven't skied since I busted my leg up in a car accident 5 years ago. I'm going to give it a try again this summer. hope to get my kids up on skies as well. Maybe we will be ready to go next year.

quinner: Where is that Potowotomie place you mentioned? When I was a youngster (long ago) my parents used to tale us to an Inn by that name at Pokagon State park.

Took my Tique to lake James last summer;and, stayed at the Potowotomie Inn within Pokagon State Park. Great place to stay with its' own boat dock. Lake is nice; however, there isn't a very good place to put-in.

Mid-West CC is near by in Angola IN.

Hey JBear,

Potowotomie Park on the Fox River in St. Charles, IL. Used to ski there quite a bit many years ago. Only a short run of deep enough water but there was a course and a jump and not much traffic back then.

quinner; Lake James is the place where we used to go.

Steve: Great memories from Lake James! The Inn was a big old-fashioned place as I remember. I was a pre-teen in those years. Dad used to rent a pontoon boat, wishing he could get a ski boat. Of course me and my brother were to Mid-West many times after I grew up a bit. Looked at your profile, one of my best friends is a "about to retire" industrial Ed teacher. Not many of you guys left. Also liked your bus. Drove a school bus for 2 years when I first retired and always wanted to grow up to drive a tour bus. You drive it? Must be cool. Loved the job you did on the Tique. You are skilled just like my buddy. Must come with the job.

I did the entire conversion and do all the driving. Will have three trips to Chicago this wk.

Lake James was fun it was only the 2nd time out for the Tique and all went well. My Grandparents had a place on Lake Tippy where I spent most of my summer wk.ends. Lots of fun. Thats when I had my Chris Craft woody

People think a boat is expensive to operate, they ought to try a bus. I can only afford to drive on charters, no private use.
Fuel (4.8mi/gal, insurance and maintinance it costs over $1.50/mile just for those three items to turn the wheels.

Their have been some good parties onboard with dancing girls ect.. To bad I was driving.
Do get into some nice places plus some interesting clubs. Most of our work is corporate in nature. Have been doing this since 1985 and it is to the point where nothing is very new. For 11 years I was teaching and driving with 4 sons at home. My wife was ready to kill me. I retired from teaching in 1996 and now only drive so it is not as bad.

Steve: Checked out the website further. You did all the interior work? Wow! Would be fun to go on some of those trips, except for the fact that you gotta drive. Still, a most cool retirment job. Yeah, I bet the wife was not to keen on your travels. Probably likes it more now that it is your only gig.

BTW...bet you had some disturbed thoughts about the tragic accident in Georgia. The one with the Baseball team from Ohio.

Guys, this event is this Sunday. If you are going to come, please let me know by posting here. We need to be on the water between 8 AM and 11 AM. Try to drum up some checks from family and friends. You can register at MS Walk Illinois and you'll get a little website for online donations or you could register last-minute at the event. Generally they would prefer that you register beforehand. I'm personally shooting for 200 bucks total from friends and family, but any amount is fine. Either way its a good opportunity to hang out with fellow footers and CC fans.
