Anyone know how to do this? I have a 1987 9.9 hp Johnson. I've had it since new, and never changed the impeller. I know how to drop the lower unit, and access the impeller, but the tricky part is disconnecting the shifting rod. Can anyone instruct me on this?

Im doing the same one right now and it is a pita, I unbolted the lower unit and you have to remove the shift rod at the top, I was instructing one of my guys how to dis-assemble and of coarse i will have to re-assemble because his brain will go soggy. the impeller is in the bottem and the biggest problem you'll have is the shifter rod

According to a schematic, it appears that the shifting rod goes into a bracket at the top, and that there are 2 bolts to loosen. How do you get to those?

riley you picked a good one to learn on....you remove the shifter rod under the water intake on the side of the L/unit.There is a barrel nut w/nylon sleeve...........318-386-2825      boat dr

Thanks boat dr. I will call you when I have the boat in front of me, and I am working on it, if I can't figure it out. I have to order the impeller. I can get the impeller for $15, or a water pump kit for $42 from Crowley Marine. Is the kit neccesary? The impeller has never been changed.

I ordered the whole kit for the reason of what the BD said, if i skimp on parts it always ends up costing me twice as what it would have originally
