    Posted: September-05-2007 at 6:54pm
I inherited a 100' x 100' shop from my deceased stepfather and have been cleaning it up a little at a time.

This weekend I discovered a correct craft boat that I know was running and in good order three years ago from speaking with his friends. The odd thing is that it has two windshields that look like half cones (I'm calling it the bat boat as of now lol). I haven't seen any with that type of windshield in any of the brochures on this site or anywhere else.

Anyone ever seen one like that?

Also where on the boat would I find the year, model, etc.?

Oh Boy, we know what you've got and we're all going to want it.

Welcome to the site, can you post some pictures. The wiser ones will post later as to what it is but is there a hull Id number on the transom?

I will take some pics this evening as I'm going to pull the tarps off and blow the dust off of it. I kind of had thought I would put a real windsheild on it but your reply makes me think maybe I shouldn't.

I'll look for a hull plate on the transom and post some more about it tomorrow.

It's a very ugly gray color, very old, I'm guessing 16'-18' long, has no damage to the hull although the deck was removed and replaced a few years ago due to watterlogging. It's supposed to be fast and sit high in the water after that. Two of his friends can't agree on what engine it has but they both say it's the original. One says he thinks it's a 302 and the other insists it's a 283. It is a v8, that I know for sure and I'm going to try to crank it tonight if I can get that far on it. It also has the original trailer and it appears to be in very good condition.

I had thoughts of giving the trailor and boat some fresh paint (something pleasing to the eye) and floating her as a classic skier. I guess I'll hold off at least until I know what it is and have some minor knowledge of it.

THAT'S IT!! Thanks so much. Now I have to work out what the hell engine is in it because neither of the options matches what I've heard about this thing.

Good thing you found this site before hacking into the boat! Take it slow and there are plenty of guys here that can get you back on the water w/o destroying that boat.

CRAP!!!!

You guys should have pleaded ignorant and told him its probably just some old piece of junk. That way I could have talked him out if it just for the sake of helping him clean up the shop.

Just kidding Geno. Welcome to the site and congratulations. You have a real beauty on your hands.

Thanks everyone for the help - apparently these things are extremely rare. I will keep the history and integrity of this vessel foremost in mind as I do something to make it visually pleasing.

I wonder how much changing the color would affect the value? Now that I know what it is, I'm planning to keep it forever but I really don't want to do much to reduce the value.

I guess if the engine isn't original (I'll know what's in it tonight - it's wrapped tightly in a bunch of big truck tarps - my stepdad had a heavy equipment repair shop) then the paint being changed to a different color won't hurt too bad either.

Sounds like youve got a lot of reading to do. The boat wasnt painted from the factory- the outer surface of the hull is gelcoat. Its much harder and more durable than paint, so I wouldnt paint over it unless its a last ditch attempt to make old, damaged gel look better. Im with Pete on this one- keep it original!

Geno,
congrats on inheriting that ugly old...errr... rare old boat!!!! Nice find!!! As for the power, 302 was a Ford based engine, the 283 is a Chevy.

A quick way to tell the dif is by looking at the valve covers.Chevy has 4 bolts in each and the ends are 90 degrees to the sides.

Fords have (I think)6 bolts in each and the ends are angled, kinda like a pyramid.. Im betting on the Ford power...not sure of the size tho?

If Im counting right, Im about 5th in line to take her off your hands!

Where you from? And get some pics!!!!

Steve the distr. is on the wrong end on a GM.but wait if its a V_Drive it is now in the right place .
Let me get this correct, if its a V-Drive and its powered by a GM the distr. is in the front....
If its a FoMoCo and it is V-drive the distr. is in the rear.....
boy is that a kick in the butttttt...................boat dr

Doc and Steve, I don't think Geno has mentioned if it is a V drive. Although rarer, there were some I/O's.

I think we are all willing it to be a V-drive.

It makes the barn find fantasy all that much juicier.

It's a V drive so the motor is in backward, it's the original 351 holman and moody 290 hp. It has non stock coil, electric fuel pump, valve covers (really pretty Mustang cast aluminum) and possibly carb (big Holley).

Hull No. SEP 1094

Engine markings:

Serial EOHM 4226-2-RWT
CPM - 290 - 4     C9HM-ME2
CR 10.5:1

No pics as of now because I'm on dial up at my mother's house - pics later tonight.

Someone painted it primer gray at some point although the original OD green gel shows through in a few places. The glass is cracked in several places but only minor - the little vent sticky uppy things on the rear deck are the worst, a few places on the engine cover, and very minor cracking on the rear deck around the engine cover. The hull is in good shape underneath with a few scratches consistant with beaching and one or two other minor scratches. The bumper strip is in exceptionally good condition. The tach has a million tiny cracks in the clear cover as do the windshields.

My stepdad extended the trailor tongue by about 6' in an attempt to help the waterlogged launching situation. The mind of a heavy equipment mechanic huh LoL?

Please be patient!!
My mother says we have the rear bench somewhere wrapped in plastic but we have a bunch of outbuildings and it may take me a while to find it. I'm amazed that the original upholstery is in useable condition at all.

It's obviously a '68 because it has no handrails on the side and never had them if you look under the rails there are no holes at all where the side handrails were on the later models.

Thanks again for the help guys - and thanks in advance for the future help because this is going to be an ongoing thing for a while I'm sure.

I'm just north of B'ham for those who asked - I work in B'ham a couple of blocks from five points south and live very near Springville.

In regards to the year, (and I know it really doesn't matter) I'm not quite certain that the picture and specs shown in the Ref Sect are actually from a '68, or more specifically that I don't think this boat is a '68, at least if the engine is original. There was no 351 yet in '68, and the brochure picture is slightly different from the rest of the photos in the '68 brochure. Look at the little swirling circle detail thing. We have no '69 or '70 brochures available, but I'll bet it's one of those years as '71 definitely changed, brochure style and boat details. If the engine is original, then it's a '70 model as the serial number implies. (Search forums for "Holman Moody chart", and a breakdown can be found.

And 62Woodhead, you couldn't buy a GM small block engine over the counter in any boat back at this time that would hang with the 290 HM. 10.5 points of premium fuel compression. Why do you think all the Donzi's of the era were powered so. Bow to the blue oval you heathen, or you're liable to find a dark blue engine in your SS this weekend. (Sorry for the sidebar ranting)

EDIT: Geno, forgot to mention, in case it wasn't already crystal clear, that this boat is the epitome of cool.
