So Tyler, you want to get serious about tire-kicking CCs across the country? Always looking for the best deal and staying away from threadjacks? Ain't gonna happen here!

Hey if I'm going to aspire to have a barn full of interesting Nautiques someday, I need this thread to stay on point!

Wow! A barn full... I like your aspirations. Hope your family shares that aspiration. ... that is usually what slows the rest of us down.

PS. I didn't find any of the interesting Correct Crafts that I've purchased on this thread.......... it is pure entertainment value - so enjoy!

Hollywood has no idea what he’s talking about. No idea about metals and molding. I think the focus should be on the califtactic responder and firmus gapper. Those make the most sense.

Quickly scanned the diaries and what few pics I have.

6 stainless 96 models
4 cast 96 models
2 cast 97 models

Of course anything could have happened in the last 20 years so these aren’t hard “facks” but it looks like they likely got the casting tooling going mid 96 model year. Finding some 95 and 98 models would really help.

So you’re saying the early 176s were detuned TOO much with their cast rudder and the fix was the fabricated stainless version. That goes along with the BoS post and against what I had assumed. Now I’m intrigued enough to collect some data points.

While inspecting a SN vs a 176 rudder of the same era (or any for that matter). The rudder on the 176 barely even touches the nut on the prop in terms of height. The larger over all and taller 11A covers IIRC about 7/8 of the propeller height.

When I drove the 176 with the small cast rudder you had to crank the wheel about 180 degrees one way or the other from idle to speed and back to idle to keep the boat moving in a straight line. The fact that only half of the propeller thrust is contacting the rudder means it's also tossing a ton of force from one side (since the propeller doesn't push its thrust in a straight line off the prop blades) and the lower part of the thrust completely missing the rudder all together explained the odd at speed vs idle handling it exhibited.

I didn't really notice this much at all driving Larrys rig with the stainless fab rudder.

So, CC detuned with the little cast rudder to keep looks the same, it sucked, so they had someone fab up a stainless rudder with more surface area and trimmed it until they were satisfied with the lack of performance vs the 11A but also wouldn't cause a bunch of complaints.

Take said rudder down to fab shop and order up a whole mess of them for replacement and future builds.

Being that it's June 5th right now, if it were me, I'd definitely ski it as is for the summer. If it meets your needs, leave it alone. If you find it lacking, swap out the rudder in the off season, or towards the end of the summer so you can compare it back to back.

Don’t believe everything you read on the internet Larry.

The fabricated stainless rudder was first, then they tooled up to cast a similar performing cast nibral version (less MFG cost + better appearance). That’s my best analysis anyway. There might be enough photos in the diaries to corroborate this.

And please don’t call either ^ an 11a.

This was an interesting post from the BOS thread linked above.

That tells me they were sold with the small foil, and replaced it with the SS. That contradicts what Charlie said about the small foil improving performance. Oh, I'm so confused.

Pete, we are metric on most things but still use miles for distance and mph for speed and us old change over guys use a mix of both I order sheets 8x4x18mm or 10x4 , 9x6 , only sheet I order in full metric 2800x2070x18mm
But my kids are all metric only ,but even they use stones and lb to give there weight
So it's a mix of both here ...but don't bother going to a big box outlet if you need NC threads they are mainly metric only.
Lets have a go

Interesting. I guess maybe why bother buying a new hole saw when they already had the 1.9 inch one in the shop already. Just slop a little more sealer in there and good to go.

One of the adapters that uses a smaller hole saw as the pilot works fantastic.

I put an 11a rudder on my 176 and love the way it handles. Then again I had read so much about the mod that I did it right away without driving the SS rudder too much.

Obviously I replaced the port as well and it went right in without any need for modifications. The screw holes lined up as well.

Just ream it out they said. What could go wrong, they said.

I'd be curious to hear Behindpropeller's opinion of before and after performance. Like I said before, I really dont have any issues with it the way it is now. Course tracking....probably not a huge concern for me.
