You're speaking some funny language The language they'd understand is that your 377 "term" up above is really about a 350 plus or minus a little depending on the bore. Do the math |

That's because there is more than one Scorpion that's 6.2 liters or 377 cubic inches. Mercruiser sold the run of the mill production engine for pleasure boats. It was the Black Scorpion 6.2 Mercury Racing sold a high performance engine with some aftermarket stuff, that was the Scorpion 377 and cost lots of money and was called the Blue engine or Blue Scorpion by some.

https://www.mercurymarine.com/en/us/documents/installation-drawings/ had to edit this in, the original link didn't work, scroll down, the ski engines are listed. Was not aware the ss scorpion was a blue motor. Only reason i'd like a complete ski scorpion, black scorpion, mpi ski etc is the availability of stainless exhaust and closed cooling I'm not opposed to the 351w, i drive an f150 because i prefer it over the chevy for several reasons, don't even mention dodge unless it's an al bundy/ married w/ children reference, but chevy parts are all over. i.e. yeah i'll have a number 3 double whopper with cheese trade the fries for o rings a coke and the stainless cmi e tops for a small block chevy. Do want those e tops polished ? No thank you the brushed finish will be fine. When i got the nautique i told myself ; "the ski boat guys will swapping scorpions for the ls and the lansdcape would be littered with sbc drop ins".

Ken, you are correct but if you go into a machine shop speak the language they understand.
Kind of like having a 351W, it may already be at .030 so approx 356 inches but when you order parts they don't ask if it is a 356W they want you to tell them it is a 351W. If needed you tell them it is bored .030 over.

Time for a math check Also time to quit talking about different variations of SBC's from Mercruiser or anybody else, at least in this thread.

Most recognize the term 383 refers to a 350 with a 400 crankshaft. Std bore or .060 most still call it a 383 even though the inches vary a little these use the 3.75 stroke.A
The 377 term is usually reserved for a 400 block with a 4.125 or 4.155 bore and a (Correction pointed out by KenO), 350 crankshaft with the 3.50 stroke. Like the 327 engine the 377 is a powerful high winding engine, short strokes like to RPM better than the long stroke engines. I would assume Mercury Marine was using stock new blocks at std or 4.000 bore so they would indeed be a 377 in fact but the speed books and machine shops consider a 350 block with a 3.75 stroke a 383 combo. I remember Malibu sold a Corvette version for a few years that used the stroked 350 and made a fast boat. You see them for sale every once in a while.

Here's a link to a Mercruiser manual for a Black Scorpion 5.7 and a Black Scorpion 6.2 Not hardly worth trying to figure out all of Mercruiser's terminology and names and different models

Black scorpions were just 350ci, not strokers unless they were the Super Scorpion variety (usually blue instead of black).
The BS was (is?) well regarded but isnt anything too special… though it was one of the first multiport Vortec 350’s so it was a huge step up over the previous 260hp stuff (initially rated at 315hp). Fancy intake but otherwise very similar to the offerings from other marinizers- Indmar Monsoon (malibu) and MCX (mastercraft), PCM Excalibur, etc. Shared many parts with the merc mag mpi. All were rated 315-343hp and had different induction, exhaust and tunes… but were all almost certainly the same vortec roller longblocks coming from GM. Both 377 (stock bore) and 383 (.030 over) strokers were offered by Merc and Indmar, or at least their advertising materials mentioned them. I’ve never measured the bore on any of the factory 383’s to be sure that it was really .030 over… |

4 inch bore and 3.75 inch stroke on the Black Scorpion makes it 377 cubic inches Since it was a new unused block when built, they didn't bore it .030 inch like the aftermarket kits for a used block usually do which worked out to 383 cubic inches with the bore job.

I believe the Scorpion engine is just a 350 with the 383 conversion. Changes the stroke from 3.48” to 3.75”. Makes a lot more torque. Very common conversion. Sealed Power sold Mercury Marine the pistons for this conversion.

Same boat in the ad, video from 2 months ago, all idle no juice. Nice looking boat, all fancied up.
Like to scare up one of those ski scorpion engines.

I saw one of these Cobalt inboards for sale on CL around here, and it took me a while to figure out that it wasn't someone slapping a Cobalt badge on an old Mastercraft, or some similar thing. It was way too nice, though, and I figured it had to be real. Sure enough...

So, the hull looks identical to the '96 Hydrodyne Grand Sport Elite I just bought. Right down to the dual tracking fins. The top deck and windshield are slightly different, but very similar. The "Hydrolam" system would seem to indicate a carry over from Hydrodyne.

And here's what Water Ski Mag had to say about it.
Click the link and go to the last 2 pictures and enlarge them and you can read their review. Like the guy in the Craigslist ad said in the video he has in the ad, it's supposedly a direct descendant of the Hydrodyne Grand Sport 20, with a swoopier looking deck and the same bottom. Lots of internet conjecture, but the Hydrodyne connection has been mentioned since they were first built. |

I have never seen a COBALT Tournament Ski Boat, Cobalt builds a very high quality boat but I never knew they offered this boat. Did they partner with someone for the hull design?

Even without seeing the interior (which suggests problems to me) I would say its high. The current owner might value the decals, but I would subtract in value for them.

I know this boat well. It came to our lake around 2007 with something like 200 hours on it, total garage queen perfect boat. It had a cracked block a few years back, but it has been rebuilt professionally by a reputable shop, and that was 4-5 years ago anyway. The seller has had a series of Correct Crafts from a '66 Barracuda, a 176, this Super Sport, and now he's got a newer 210. He took good care of this one (well, all of them really). It's never had a tower on it, and he used some ballast in it but not much. It's got a ton of life in it, and it's in good condition overall. I don't have direct relationship to the sale, but the boat is a good one. It's at a marina now, so they probably just want someone to call for details. I would have put more info on the ad, but again it's not mine. |

Agree, Air Nautique, not 210, not Pro-Air. Unless I'm missing something with the names from 2000. At least it comes with a huge tube!
