Hey guys,
Can anyone please identify what spec this engine is.? It looks very much like the 240hp from my 89 with the exception of the ignition setup. Would it be the 260hp or the 300hp without the flame arestor cover or is it something else.? Also, I've heard that there can be problems with this ignition setup.? It's in a 1993 sport. |

It could be either the standard 240/255hp 351w or the 285/300hp Proboss. Theres no way to tell from the pic. Take a look at the ends of a head and see if it has 2 bars or 3. Either that or tell us the 3rd digit of the engine ID: PLX...

TR: Perhaps you could tell for the intake???
my bet is it's a 285, I think I can see the Power plus tranny also. Was the stock 351 240 or 255hp??? |

Yup, its a 1.23:1 Power Plus tranny. They put that tranny behind both flavors of the 351w (HO and non-HO). My take on the hp ratings is that there is no difference between the 240 and 255 hp engines, nor is there a difference between the 285hp and 300hp engines. Its all in whose marketing literature you want to believe (CC or PCM). The main difference between the HO vs. standard 351w is the GT40 heads. There may or may not be a slight cam difference, and I believe the pistons are different, as is the ignition programming (probably to take advantage of the compression ratio differences). 79 is correct, that is the Protec ignition system. Its not the most reliable system from what Ive read- but no need to replace it if its running fine. Our old '92 (sold to a friend) still runs great. Its not terribly expensive ($500) or difficult to replace if it craps out on you. Both versions of the carb'd 351w used the same intake manifold, so that doesnt help with ID'ing the engine. The only way to tell for sure is by using one of the methods mentioned above. |

I only have the serial number. Don't know if that helps. Apparently the model ID is illedgable.
Serial No. 332039. |

Chopper, maybe try calling PCM to see if they have a record of the serial number? Either that or call CC if you have the hull ID- they should be able to find the build sheet for the boat.
Alternatively, you could have the seller take a picture of the front of the head. The Proboss would have GT40 heads, which have 3 bars in the same location as the GT40p (4 bars) pictured here: |
