My 84's hour meter will run when just the radio is on in the boat, the guy I bought it from said when the new engine got dropped in it started doing that. anyone tell me what the hell is going on

sounds like hour meter is wired hot al the time . look behind dash should have a purple wir to gauge that is coming from ing. switch. if not wire it that way. black goes to ground.
