     > THE PERFECT BARNYARD
     >
     > "Who will help me plant my wheat?" said the little red
     > hen.
     > "Not I," said the cow.
     > "Not I," said the duck.
     > "Not I," said the pig.
     > "Not I," said the goose.
     > "Then I will do it by myself," said the little red hen,
     > and so she did. She planted her crop, and the wheat grew very tall and
     > ripened into golden grain.

     > "Who will help me reap my wheat?" asked the little red
     > hen.
     > "Not I," said the duck..
     > "Out of my classification," said the pig.
     > "I'd lose my seniority," said the cow.
     > "I'd lose my unemployment compensation," said the goose.
     > "Then I will do it by myself," said the little red hen,
     > and so she did.
     >
     >
     > At last it came time to bake the bread.
     > "Who will help me bake the bread?" asked the little red
     > hen.
     > "That would be overtime for me," said the cow.
     > "I'd lose my welfare benefits," said the duck.
     > "I'm a dropout and never learned how," said the pig.
     > "If I'm to be the only helper, that's discrimination,"
     > said the goose.
     > "Then I will do it by myself," said the little red hen.
     >
     >
     > She baked five loaves and held them up for all of her
     > neighbors to see. They wanted some and, in fact, demanded a share. But
     > the little red hen said, "No, I shall eat all five loaves."
     >
     > "Excess profits!" cried the cow. (Nancy Pelosi)
     > "Capitalist leech!" screamed the duck. (Barbara Boxer)
     > "I demand equal rights!" yelled the goose. (Jesse
     > Jackson)
     > The pig just grunted in disdain. (Ted Kennedy)
     >
     > And they all painted 'Unfair!' picket signs and marched
     > around and around the little red hen, shouting obscenities.
     > Then the farmer (Obama) came. He said to the little red
     > hen, "You must not be so greedy."
     > "But I earned the bread," said the little red hen.
     >
     > "Exactly," said Barack the farmer. "That is what makes
     > our free enterprise system so wonderful. Anyone in the barnyard can
     > earn as much as he wants. But under our modern government regulations,
     > the productive workers must divide the fruits of their labor with those
     > who are lazy and idle."
     > And they all lived happily ever after, including the
     > little red hen, who smiled and clucked, "I am grateful, for now I truly
     > understand."
     > But her neighbors became quite disappointed in her. She
     > never again baked bread because she joined the 'party' and got her bread
     > free. And all the Democrats smiled. 'Fairness' had been established.
     > Individual initiative had died, but nobody noticed;
     > perhaps no one cared...so long as there was free bread that 'the rich'
     > were paying for..
     >
     > EPILOGUE
     > Bill Clinton is getting $12 million for his memoirs.
     > Hillary got $8 million for hers.
     > That's $20 million for the memories from two people, who
     > for eight years repeatedly testified, under oath, that they couldn't
     > remember anything.
     > IS THIS A GREAT BARNYARD OR WHAT?

Of course the reality in America today is that the hen wants to use the farm tractor and equipment (infrastructure), drop all the industrial waste in the farm pond, and crap all over the barnyard (reduced regulation) and not kick in as much as one out of five loafs to upkeep the tractor, pay the dogs that scare the crows off the crop (military), and clean up the mess he made of the common area.

But other than that it is a nice fairy tale.

Its just a story. Though -
The EPA is a sore spot for me Joe.
It STOPS US production but says ok we can buy
the same stuff from China.

The world IS a small place in space lets be stuwards
of the whole thing.
Level the playing field so business here can prosper.
Then we can lead the way.

The funny thing about America, there is a lot more
people trying to get in than get out!

I don't disagree that about the epa not talking about what can't get in. That isnt what the EPA is for though. We had a world without the EPA.. I drive by the second most polluted lake in north america every day as a result of that world. They are now beginning a decade long project to dredge and cap it.. wont be usuable for another 20 years after that. We have an entire town within a two hour drive of me where noone will ever live again. I refuse to believe that america has to destroy its' water and air to be competitive. This is america we dont have to run to the bottom and beg the rich for the right to work for them in low wage jobs. If you want to talk improved trade policys or reduced currency manipulation from our trade partners I am all in favor.

The cafe standards being doubled as announced today effect american and foreign products sold here.. and will create a lot of work for middle class engineers, techs, etc and will save the average american 3 times as much as fuel costs over the life of a vehicle than it will cost in added vehicle and development cost. Just as important in my mind, it keeps the technology moving forward at a pace where the chinese/vietnamise or what have you cant simply copy three year old designs and keep up, no matter how much they are willing to destroy thier environment to do so. All that is positive without even considering the society benefit of reducing our dependency on foreign oil, which reduces the need for a military to protect our interests in the middle east, and who knows it might reduce the smog our grandkids will be breathing.

But it is sure to be called socialism and big brother interference and every other ism by the paid for by the .01% "conservative" media and those they support for office. Pretty soon we will be told they are coming to take our trucks and put us in little unsafe tin cans that won't pull our correctcrafts. And some paid for lobbist type will pay some punk snot nose frat boy from liberty university to write snarky little email stories about it and post them where they will be reposted all over the internet...

Joe, I am letting most of red hen story go, but how do see us making the gains without giving up safety and capability? There is no way I wish to tow a 3000lb boat with a 1500 pound car. I don't see drive train improvements moving us forward fast enough to meet meet those goals without some serious weight reductions. As a former paramedic I am a big fan of having mass on your side. We called it the lug nutlaw. The vehicle with the most lug nuts (biggest) always wins.
For thousands of years men have felt the irresistible urge to go to sea, and many of them died. Things got better after they invented boats.

So that it then.. folksy feely commonsensism says we have taken technology as far as it can go ... might as well just start rolling in the chinese made hummer copys for everyone to drive around..and put 12 lugs per wheel cause that will make us safer. (except for all those iranian terrorists we will be funding with those high oil prices)

There is more than enough proven tech available to meet the goals..(which is why industry and the labor unions agreed to them). They simply need the economys of scale applied along with careful analysis to bring the costs in line. It takes math, science, computer tools, time, testing, and patience. Plain ol competititive ingenuity. Not every car or truck will get 50mpg.. but the regulation doesnt say every car or truck needs to. Will it result in less soccer moms driving around suburbans and more driving around minivans.. yep.. are modern minivans safer than suburbans.. yep (and faster, more comfortable, and more fuel efficient). Perhaps they are less likely to survive an accident.. but the occupants are not.

That doesn't mean you cant buy a suburban it just means you are more likely to pay it's real cost and only decide to do so if you need to pull something with it. Even then it will be a better suburban with all the technologies used in the higher volume car market applied to it.

There isn't a gas car on the road today that wouldnt get 10% better mileage with no more attention than an additional gear in the transmission and a computer tuned to maximize mileage and not maximize hp at some rpm that the engine is never likely to run at.

- a socialist country would (and does) solve these same problems by taxing the crap out of gas - Obama has chosen the american solution which has been since 1975 to work with industry to evaluate the state of the technology and set the goals well in advance giving each competitor the chance to meet those goals in which ever way they feel will make them most competitive.

Under Bush all the HVAC standards were relaxed, or not enforced (you could put an energy star label on anything with no consequences and companies like lg did)... this was not at a request of the hvac industry but a cop out to the energy interests. The result is chinese copies of my old designs are all over the place and instead of implementing all the new stuff that saves more than enough money to pay for itself. You shift all your efforts into cost savings programs.. which generally means making things thinner and sourcing less efficient and lower quality components from overseas. Leaving the customer with inefficient, short lived junk primarily made overseas...

That new ford c max has me wanting to buy a new car for the first time in 13 years...

Joe, Sorry if I came of too negative, I was hoping to get some of your wisdom. We Have by no means gone as far as we can go. I wonder if we are limiting ourselves by using MPG standards, doesn't that rule out a lot of technology? My specific question is how far can we push the internal combustion engine before the cost exceeds the gains. I have no clue what current efficiency is, 30% 50% 70%? I know as you climb higher in efficiency it gets far more difficult to achieve significant gains. I am very impressed with the ford eco technology. As long as they make useable vehicles with better mileage I look forward to owning them. If they make high mileage vehicle that no one wants or fail to do what they should that is a problem. I heard yesterday that they are shutting down the Volt production for a few months again because production has exceeding sales.
