    Posted: June-03-2016 at 12:57am
I have a neighbor offering me a boom for $100. My first thought is buy it. Is that a good price? How do I know whether it will fit my boat? Or is that trial and error. I have never had a boom. Any advice is appreciated. I know it would be great for teaching kids in the future so I'd like to own one.

I would buy it 100 bucks is pretty dang cheap. Unless its some kind of cheap boom. I should say if its a Barefoot international or a ECI its cheap.

What are some better boom brands? I thought BI was the one to get.

Edit: never mind I thought you were saying BIs and ECIs are cheap but just realized you are saying $100 for a BI or ECI is cheap.

I paid $500 for my Barefoot Intl straight boom (with an extension) about 4 years ago, brand new. $100 is a steal.

In terms of fit, your main consideration will be how far the windshield extends back towards stern on your boat, and if the windshield is aft of the pylon then you'd need a curved boom vs straight. See the barefootinternational.com site for details.

I LOVE having a boom. I'm 99% success rate in getting first-timers up on skis or board, and 100% on barefooting. It makes it SO EASY because of the physical support and proximity of the skier, so you can coach and they have something that supports their weight.

Do it.

OK, I got more info on the boom. It is a Barefoot International The Boom. It is a straight boom (no curve coming over the gunwell and down). It has a clamp but no height adjuster block. Looks like most everything is there. May be missing a bolt to link the two parts of the boom together but that looks like something easy to replace (yes?). Will it fit my sport? When in, will I just have to have the driver seat all the way forward?

Yes it will work, you may have to move the seat up one click I use a straight BI out the drivers side on my '95 SN with no problems. For 100 bucks that's a deal.

Thanks you everyone. It is in my possession. Going to install this weekend and then pay my neighbor. Any tricks to installing the clamp as to not mess up my perfect looking black pylon? Masking tape maybe, etc? Also, reading the install instructions on BI's site, sounds like the pin/through bolt I thought was missing may be an integrated pin that I just overlooked.

you can buy the "pins" from BI, Lake Elmo Sports, The Footers Edge etc. Put that thing on and lets get you footing!

Also McMaster. Take some measurements and get what you need.

Carbon steel from the local Ace will work for a while.
