borg warner troubles???

I just bought a 1982 nautique and had it out today for the first time. It goes into forward perfect, and it goes into reverse good, but it seems alot more harse when it goes into reverse. is this normal. also the coupling where the drive shaft enters the boat, under the access lid has a small steady stream of water entering the boat. I was told that this needs to be only a drop now and then. do I need a new bushing or is there an adjustment. I do not have a manual telling me about this. Thanks in advance for all input!

you can loosen the lock ring and tighten it up, but you should replace the flax packing. (available at skidim, boatersworld, westmarine, ect) cut 5 circles and offset the gap 180 degrees for each piece. 1 drop every 10 seconds and no drips when the shaft is not turning is what you are shooting for.

'harshness' in reverse could be any number of things. do one thing at a time, but change the tranny fluid, see if the prop is bottomed on the taper of the shaft, check the shaft at the flange for slop and check the engine alignment/engine mounts.


if the clutch pack needs replacing, mark at marinegears has helped me with parts for the 71c b/w in the 72.

Download and print out the two Borg Warner Velvet Drive manuals from the Reference Section. They should help. You'll also find the manual for your PCM 351 if you need it.

Does the boat run smoothly? You might want to check your plugs. I know that sounds stupid, but last year I thought I had a transmission problem. The boat was running very rough and to top it all off, when I would put it into reverse, it would make funny clangy noises like something was banging around in the trans case. I found out that if the boat has even 1 fouled out plug, it will cause a mad chain of events. I replaced the plugs and poof......perfect shifting.

I have had the boat in the water since, and on a warmer day and it runs great. sounds much better in a little warmer weather. Reverse is a little more harsh but from what I hear this is normal. Thank you all for your input. What a boat, you've got to love these correct craft boats. This is my first inboard and I am sold!!

did you get the shaft log tightened up?

when you put the boat into reverse, you are pulling on the two small set screws at the prop shaft flange. these will cut a groove in the stainless shaft over time. you might pull the shaft out and turn it 180 degrees if the bore is still tight.

run it in forward gear and mark the joint with a felt tip pen. give it a bump in reverse and see if the mark moves away from the flange.

the only water around here that isn't frozen is the back of the toilet. i'm just kidding, but it's been a cold one this year.

you can't 180 shaft without cutting new key way. most of the time the area at the coupler is so bad the shaft needs to replaced.

elberts double taper shafts are 'the bomb'. anyone with a worn out single taper should pony up and get one.

since all the vibration threads have surfaced, shorting the shaft to get the prop closer to the strut, as bill has recommended, is next on the meal plan.

i think i'll do a little experimentation on the torio this summer. the prop is a good 6" behind the strut even though the v-drive box has been move forward. it has a 14" diameter prop a couple inches clear of the hull, so i should have room to play.
