I have a new to me 1987 SN 2001. My overheating alarm is going off when I park after the boat is warmed up. When to boat is running the temperature gauge shows 160-170.

1. I stop the boat to change skiers
2. Turn off the engine
3. Sit for a couple minutes (engine and key off)
4. Turn the key back on to ignition

The gauge will show 220 degrees and the horribly loud alarm will go off. Once I start the engine and the cooling pump is going the temperature comes right back down to normal temperature. If I accelerate the throttle it cools off even faster.

New to CC and never had this issue on any of my other boats. Does the water in the block get super hot like 220 degrees, specifically where the temperature sensor is located?

You might want to verify temp with an IR thermometer. They are about $20. Very useful item. Maybe the sending unit is bad.

It is a 1987    2001 Nautique with a stock 351w. I have an infrared thermometer. Do you have a recommendation about where I should measure and what temperature it should be?

Hit it all over the block and see what it's reading, but more specifically at the water temp sending unit on the top of the intake manifold. Also confirm what type of thermostat you have...should be a 143 for a carbed 351.

My dad's 88 2001 would sometimes alarm on restart after a hard run. Is your impeller new?

Congrats on the new to you boat!!! I'm sure you will enjoy it. any pics?

My boat did this and I searched this site and as others have explained in those posts...when you run the boat hard and then stop, the water isn't "cooling" the engine, so the water in the block will heat up, but shouldn't heat up to dangerous levels. Read TRBenj's second response of the thread: Thread Link

As a side note: A former MC employee clarified the thermostat differences in a thread earlier this week. He stated that PCM engines in fresh water environments operate efficiently at 160º, but running in salt water, the optimum temp is 142º (he made a point of saying 142 and not 140) . He said running cooler in fresh doesn't hurt anything, just less optimal. can anyone else confirm or deny this? I couldn't find any sources.

I pulled the harness from the alarm as suggested by these guys. It started having a mind of it's own. If you go this route, just keep a close eye on your gauges.

OK I think I figured out what is happening. It is getting hot when parked because the exhaust manifolds are leaking. Dang it! I started a new thread and then I finally put it all together
