I looked around but I'm terrible at finding forum threads. So if there is already a discussion please post the link

I have a 351 and want to do a top mount starter. I have the flywheel from a mercruiser style 351 with 157 teeth. Do I need to get a different flywheel to use a top mount starter?

Thanks!

Richie,I think someone who knows Ford top mount starters is going to be hard to find here. I suggest to go over to fishtheclassic and ask there. I know that I have seen those questions there and I know that there are some that have actually done it. One big problem is finding a bell housing another is getting the right parts so it all lines up. Shamrocks used PCM Fords for many years. Good luck.

Richie, it's the bell housing that determines which flywheel (157 or 164 tooth) to use, as the bell housing locates the starter.
Remember, too that the starter drives the flywheel in opposite directions when mounted to front of (standard location) or rear top-mount.
Choose your pieces carefully.

I'd read this thread and then send mfinch a PM through the site.

You'll see a picture of his 351w engine in that thread with a top mount starter

He was asked what the tag on the bellhousing said, but...............no reply

Here's a link to a used Mercruiser bellhousing for a SBF for a top mount starter

link

Have no idea if it's still available but there's a part number listed   Mercruiser 63827 which is no longer being produced.

Also I think it uses a 164 tooth ring gear in this application unlike most of the marine SBF's that had 157 teeth.

You could look up parts for a Mercruiser 225L inboard to find part numbers for this swap

Make sure it's an L or you'll end up in Chevy territory
