I ended up buying a rebuilt engine from ATK marine, they had the same exact model, 285 hp with the gt40 heads. I could have saved $500 and gone with the 240 model. but wanted to put the exact same engine back into the boat.

The exhaust headers look in good shape, but I am afraid to put them back on without testing them or buying new. Any ideas on how to test them?

There is a way to test them, I've seen it discussed on here. You may wish to google "correct craftfan exhaust manifold test"

and you'll get this thread among others:

You'll want to take a really close look at your risers, and make sure you replace the manifold to riser gaskets.
