I am getting ready for Spring and I selected the Valvoline VR 40 wt oil for my 1999 285 hp . Now I am stuck on the filter. It has a Fram Ph8a but I want a good filter. I would like to use the mobile 1 M1-301 high performance filter. It is bigger, so I need to know if it would fit, and if it is a good selection?

As a second note. Do you prefill the filter as I have heard other do, or not, which is what the manual says???

Thanks!

Depends on who you want to believe, some say shell Rotella 15w40 is good others says VR1, you need to decide. A high quality filter is always a good idea. As far as pre-filling the filter, my mechanic says do it, on my excal it's easy so I do it, on my 312 it would be near impossible without making a huge mess.

Why in the world is the dead 🐴 still being beaten. He has chosen vr2 it's in the first sentence. We are now debating filters. Next week is how often to change impellers, the week after we will run through winterizing once again just because. No exceptions.......

I'm not a big fan of Fram filters.

I use K&N or Wix / NAPA filters.

Paul,
It all depends on what engine you are installing the filter on. Like CQ mentions, on a 312 with the filter mount being horizontal you can prefill at all. I can tell you it's even a mess removing the filter on a 312!!! I use a plastic bag over the filter but it's always inevitable to get some oil in the bilge. Some OMC's are the same with the filter in the horizontal position.

Welcome to CCfan. Do you have a Correct Craft? If so, tell us more.
