It seems that CCF in general is anti surfing, but is there anyone else around here riding foils other than the airchair?
We wakefoil, surf, and wakeboard around here. ***No I don't throw huge, damaging wake, and I only do it in open water.*** |

Got any pictures? I have been seeing some vids around every now and then but frankly I am scared to death of there being a foil in the water with me that isn't safely attached to the other side of a board I am firmly strapped to... Then I see people surfing them on beaches? How does that not involve crashing into the ground and wrecking a foil?

I've been riding sit down hydrofoils for years. Great fun and very safe since you are strapped in. Definitely easier on the knees! One of the biggest dangers is kicking the wing while your swimming next to the board. The wings trailing edge is really sharp.
Wake foiling is a lot of fun and I have seen many riders using them without boots. You couldn't pay me to do that. Wakefoils sells stand up foils with boots. wakefoils Good company with a well made set up. Mike Murphy, who was one of the original patent holders for the Air Chair, is associated with them. The higher aspect ratio wings are great for wake surfing and Mike can cruise the the second wake way back while instructing newbies riding the first larger wake. Amazing how little wake it takes to keep the foil going. Certainly opens up wake surfing for those without huge boats and a ton of ballast. Foils are really efficient. I watched my buddy ride a stand up foil without boots. Usually he fell away from the foil. But I saw the board flip over and the wing went right past his head. Damn. With all of the leverage from the t bar that would have been bad. Check out this link to what can happen if you get smacked! What Happens Gotta foil! |

I love foiling!
I understand the dangers of getting a foil strike, but I've weighed the risks, and I'm happy with my decision. When foil surfing we go slow enough that you can be intentional about ejecting away from the foil - and due to the construction, the boards natural state in the water is foil down board on surface, so it's not laying on it's side with a dangerous foil lurking.... It's also nice, because it means I can do the sports that I love without feeling some dumb desire for a "big wake hull" boat, and my small boat isn't clogged up with ballast constantly. |

The ocean foilers just make sure to surf breaks that remain more than 3' deep in the trough. Which is one of the beautiful things about the foil, because they are so efficient they don't need a big breaking waves on the face. They can ride just the swell before it becomes a breaking wave. Of course you see dudes foiling pipeline on the North shore, but that break is actually deeper than some people might expect, then they just pick up the foil and walk in back onto the beach. |

Yeah, extremely dangerous when used at a populated surf break!! Or trying to run multiples behind a single boat. But just like any other aspect of living, a little common sense and risk management goes a long way! |
