Looking at my under water gear I noticed rust/corrosion on the driveshaft.

Is this something I should be concerned with?

It's red/brown and appears to be "baked" in, it's not a superficial rust powder that would wipe off.

Boat has been owned and used only in clear fresh Canadian waters.

Unfortunately didn't take any pics. Will next time.

The shafts are stainless - are they not? I do believe it was replaced a few years back, but still shouldn't corrode like this?

Everything seems to operate smoothly if that means anything.

Sounds like the grade of stainless used when they replaced the shaft isn't one that's very resistant to corrosion. Yes, stainless steel will corrode! As long as the corrosion doesn't start to affect the cutlass bearing and the stuffing in the gland, you should be fine.

"Baked in" could also refer to a discoloration to the stainless that can happen under intense heat - such as running the system in gear out of the water for a while or perhaps at high rpm with a worn cutlass.   Are you sure it is rust that you're seeing?

If it bothers you get some MaryKate On Off hull cleaner,a rag and some rubber gloves and just wipe it down. Keep it off yourself and your trailer. It will come off that easy.

Thanks! Anything I should look out for with respect to the bearing going south?    

Also are there any makes of shaft to stay away from? Can't believe there would be more than a few companies making them...

I'll get some photos next time I'm at the boat (hopefully next week) to show everyone what I'm seeing.

It doesn't look like overheated metal, it looks like rust . Unfortunately it's not something I noticed before so no idea when it happened or for how long.

I certainly haven't run the boat out of water in gear, but I've only owned it since last year, although have known the boat for some time.

I'm fairly certain the strut was replaced with the shaft and not many hours on either but not 100%. I'll see if I can get more info from the marina who did the work but it has now been at least 5 years.

Cutlass bearing shouldn't have a whole lot of play - if it jiggles around in the strut, it may be time for a new bearing. I can't remember the acceptable tolerance but if you use the forum search, you'll likely come across it or another member will chime in with it soon.

I couldn't tell you which shaft companies to stay away from, but there are a few favorite ones on the site. I and a few others opted for A.R.E. shafts last fall and another site recommendation is usually General Propeller

I don't feel heat caused the discoloration since it takes a pretty high heat to affect SS. You would have had the cutlass and the shaft packing smoking if that was the case. Think about a SS fry pan on the stove. They see heat but even they don't get hot enough to discolor.

Im thinking more of chemical stain that corrosion. Like that orange stain from tanic in southern lakes and well water. If there is no associated pitting then its not corrosion.

that certainly could be.    They cleaned the boat up prior to my purchase last year, so likely used some bottom cleaner.

No pitting.   I'll take some pics and see if I can clean it off.

thanks for all the help!   I know I'll have more questions as I try to dial this beauty in.
