I have a 96 Correctcraft Sport Nautique that has about 350 hours on it. We took it out and had 4 people ski without any problem starting the engine. After we took a little break the boat started and quickly petered out. The engine then wouldn’t start but it would turn over and sound like it was about to start and then wouldn’t. Any idea of what is wrong?

Does it have Peo-tec ignition? They are known to fail with heat soak.

Less simple ..............can you hear the fuel pumps run when you turn the key on?

You can read about fuel pump and ECM relays in this thread in the link below.

Either relay being bad will keep the fuel pumps from running

If you look at the diagram in the link you'll find breakers for the fuel pumps and ECM that you can check too.

Brock, when the engine died you said it "quickly petered out". Did it surge and almost die and surge again, or did it just start, run 5 seconds, and die? And, did you again try to start it hours later once it had completely cooled down?

On the kill switch lanyard question - it's worth removing the lanyard and holding the switch in all the way with your thumb while trying to start, just to make sure. I had a lanyard that just barely engaged the switch, then didn't quite engage it, had to change out the switch.

From what it sounds like, you need to replace the ECM relay. Very same problem with my 98 gt 40. Very inexpensive to replace, and easy fix.
With key and ignition on, you can try tapping on the relay and listen for a "buzz" of the fuel pump to charging.

We are all assuming at this point that you have the GT40 engine since you say it is fuel injected. Just to be clear, CC had at least a couple of Ford options for several years in the 90's, one of which was a 260hp carburated 351. The only one (Ford 351) to my knowledge that was fuel injected in 96' was the GT40:

GT40

Any updates on progress?

Maybe he figured this out, maybe he didn't.

Maybe he's halfway through the manual.

His replies were just chock full of info

I can here the fuel pump buzzing without doing anything so does that indicate whether or not that needs to be replaced?

Brock,
Have you had a chance to take a look at the manual and the gt40 diagnosis thread?
Yes, more details would be great so we can try to help like the fuel pressure at the rail?
