Yeah I been watching that. What kind of anchors and lines are they using to not break? And I thought I was a bad driver for those -35 and less

Ball of Spray owner said was because the engine seized. Hard to see how that would cause that.

I wonder what all damage that did to the prop, shaft, hull, ruder, transmission, etc. Hopefully no one got too seriously hurt. That could've easily killed someone!

Agree. If they prop stopped it couldn't cause a hard nose dive.
I can't see that slamming it in reverse would do that.

Definitely looks like he got hung up. I'm surprised those buoys are attached so firmly.

Plus the center line of boat was right inline with boat guides.... had to have gotten hung up. If motor seized wouldn’t there be prop slippage to a degree?

Todd,
I feel to pull the bow down like that, the hang up had to be pretty far forward like the bow eye on the stem or a tracking fin? It sure would be great if more info comes out on exactly what caused the issue.

I agree, however, I had no idea that those were attached to the boat good enough. It looks like it would have ripped the bow eye or the tracking fin right off.

Latest is that the kid driving the boat was young, panicked, and slammed the boat into reverse causing this and blowing the engine.

Reverse is plausible, seizing on its own at that speed is about unheard of and with a hydraulic trans would have not locked the prop for more than a split second. Sure looks like he wrapped a cable around the prop that was attached to a concrete block, easier to believe that wrecked an engine than a reverse slam- knarley either way

C&P’d from YouTube description:

Father and his son water skiing the slalom course. Driver was making adjustments to speed control got off course at the start. For unknown reason, at 34 MPH, the nose of the boat dove into the water instantly, submerged, then surfaced again. Boat ran over a rubber buoy which was attached by surgical tubing to the anchor below. When done, the buoy was missing but the bungee was still attached (unbroken) and anchor had not moved.   No cables, ropes, or devices underwater anywhere in this lake.

So it's just a coincidence boat was dead centered over guide bouy line and immediately after the boat goes over the gate buoy the engine locks up...

I make boats do that all the time when I cut across the wake.

Have talked extensively to one of the club members at this site.
Boat has no under water gear or hull damage. Though engine is locked up and the windshield is destroyed.

I put the video up on my big screen TV and from my view I would have to say the very young driver in the boat freaked out when he realized he was going to run over the left side buoy line and threw it in reverse.. This was the kids first attempt at driving the slalom course with a skier in tow..
Hobby Boats can be expensive when the hobbyist is limited on their own skill and expertise.

So it seems the sudden reverse is likely the cause. As far as the operator error, I can attest from first hand experience that an inexperienced driver can easily be panicked and react in a very illogical way. Case in point, last fall when my daughter ventured too close to the rocky shore and in a panic gave the boat full throttle and hard to port. Later, stating in that split second she was just trying to get the boat away from the shore quickly - which of course just drove the boat into an even more shallow area and right over the rocks.

We both learned something that day ... she has a lot more to learn about driving a boat, especially anywhere close to the shore (or other boats, people, etc.) and I learned that I should never let someone behind the wheel that isn't very confident in their ability without watching very closely what and where they are going.

Things I'm never going to try: 1. Throw the boat into reverse at full speed.

Poor kid. Glad to hear that all is OK. Looks like a few more times through the course for practice and with another experienced adult in the boat would have been a good idea. Hindsight is 20-20.
