Hey guys...So I've decided that I want to get a second prop for my 93 SN.   I will keep the original prop thats on it currently as a spare. It's got a few little nicks and dings, so may get those fixed on it, after I swap them out.

Anyway, my engine is: PRP-PR-R10   and my transmission is the 1:1

I am attaching a pic of what is currently on the boat. Is this NOT a right hand prop?? or am I mistaken? Just want to be sure to order correctly. Props are so confusing.

Also, should I look at a 3 blade, or 4 blade? I am looking for a bit better Hole shot.

Dan,
First, that is a RH prop. It turns clockwise to propel the boat forward. I and I believe others will recommend the Acme 540.

https://acmemarine.com/pages/custom-fit was spot on for my needs.

[edit to add]
On my 88 I put a ACME 540 3 Blade 13" X 12"   WOW what a difference compared to the stock Federal prop (13RH13) Great out of the hole, max speed is down a bit to ~45 +/- Gulps gas at WOT so rarely up there. Highly responsive.

Yeah...my current WOT speed is around 45 + or -. with the current old 4 blade on it. I wouldn't mind dropping a few MPH's for some really good "out of the hole" pull.

DGabler....I don't think a 540, 3 blade on my boat would be any good. With the 285hp engine, and the pitch on that prop, it would put my RPM's well above the recommended 5000rpms.

Not sure which prop would be best for your boat, but I'd certainly recommend an Acme. Just put an Acme 1214 12.5x13 on my 16' Mustang and it has substantially improved the boat. Previously had a Federal 13x13. The new prop pulls out of the hole harder, porpoises a bit less, keeps the engine turning a lower max rpm, and actually increased top speed. Evidently prop design has improved a lot in the past 40 years.

Not sure how you got there.

540 would be the right place to start. Could potentially benefit from a 542.

TR...I'll give the 540 a go then. My 351HO, WITH 1;1 trans would be a good match with it you think??

Tim. I appreciate your help. I've ordered an ACME 540 for $349.99 from Wavemakers. Seems to be a pretty good price.

If you want some Time Saver's Yellow I bought a 1# can I am happy to send you a bit, PM me your address. I went with Time Savers vs permatex as it is non-embedding. Not sure how much of an issue it truly is.

The 540 is a nice prop, I run that on my 76SN and love it.

For posterity, if you could take a picture of your wake from the stern of the boat at 30mph with the old prop and new prop, i would be most interested in seeing that.

GottaSki

I'll do that....We ran home for the weekend, once we get back "up north"   I'll take it out and shoot some photos of the wake with the old 4 blade..then once I get the new 540 on, I'll do the same thing, and POST back here.

GottaSki - I took the boat out this morning with my two boys..and here is the photo of the wake at 30 mph, on the prop that the boat came with. (an O.J. 608) 4 blade.

Got my new 540 installed this morning.
I think the old O.J. 680 MUST have been on this boat as OEM.

The new 540 was installed the same as the 680....two Nuts, and NO cotter pin. There wasn't even a hole in the shaft that I saw.   Was this ever common?? I see most with a thin nut, thick nut and cotter, pin...mine just has two thicker nuts. Again, it's the way it came when I got it.

Anyway, here is a pic of the new 540 on. Ready to test out tonight on the lake.

Looks hot.

No, that shaft has been replaced. CC always used a castle nut with a cotter pin up until the early 2000s or so when they went to a nylock but that also still employed an emergency cotter pin stuck through the end of the shaft,

Also, an Acme 13" always tends to be a little larger in diameter of another 13" propeller. Give it a spin and make sure it doesn't contact your prop guard just for good measure.

Here's a little discussion in the link to maybe expand your nut knowledge whether you have 2 or just 1

GottaSKi.....All I can say is WOW. this new Acme 540 has "awoke" the beast in my 93 S.N.

Engine is out of the hole like no tomorrow, and there is NO vibration at all in the drive from idle, on up to W.O.T.

I LOVE it. I am going to send my OJ 680 in to be refurbished, as it'll be kept as a "spare" if i ever need it.

Here's a PIC of the boat at 30 MPH with the 540. My kids said there is a noticeable difference when skiing in the wake.

I agree that the ACME 540 is quite nice. your top end RPM is ok?

Where are you sending the OJ to get tuned?

top end RPM was quite a bit lower than my old OJ. I was reading 4600 give or take a few at WOT.

probably take it just north of us here to a prop shop that does them.

What did the gps say? Either your tach is off or you’re missing 200-400rpm somewhere.

Thank you for the pictures!
Seems to be somewhat less frothing in the middle, and roost stayed nicely in control.

It would be cool if we each contributed to a library reference thread of wake images for all assorted boats; post model, year, engine, loading, speed, line length if applicable. sure add Top speed/rpm and general satisfaction. I find just speaking top speed and rpm alone to be missing part of the story.

I am going to take it out tonight (if storms stay away) and check again. I did have 5 people in the boat when I checked, and didn't GPS it either...... I just had glanced at the RPM's once while running a WOT, so I'll pay more attention and report back.

My top end RPM also dropped with the Acme prop vs my old Federal.

With the Federal I was turning 4,900rpm at 43mph

The Acme turns 4,500 at 48mph
