Hey guys, after putting in my new DUI, it looks like the little collar that holds it down to the block is too small. The flange on the DUI is taller than the original distributor. Anybody else run into this? If so, what was the solution?

Also, should there be a gasket between the dizzy and the block?

When you removed the original dizzy, did the hexagonal oil pump drive shaft stay fully seated in the camshaft, or was it dislodged? Sometimes, getting the oil driveshaft to properly seat can be a bit tricky. I had to modify a pair a long-reach needle-nose pliers to manipulate the oil pump driveshaft so that the dizzy would fully seat.

Post a couple of pix of what things look like.

I’ve heard similar scenarios. Are you sure gears are seating correctly? I don’t remember what I did with mine but it was so easy and straightforward even a caveman could’ve done it.

The DUI is fully seated. It's the collar that holds it in place that won't sit all the way down now.

Assuming you know how to verify you are on #1 compression stroke?

Bump your engine with the key, within a bump or two the distributor will drop down normally.   When it drops the rotor will turn slightly and that may leave you in the wrong position for timing. You may have to lift the distributor and drop it again with your rotor turned to the correct position. When it drops watch to see how much your rotor turns.
Remembering this adjust your rotor so as it drops it lands in the desired #1 fireing position..
If this makes no sense there is sure to be a youtube video showing how this works.
Ask any questions you wish, it is better to get it done right and quickly and get back out on the water.

Well Rob

It seems that everybody wants to tell you it's not seated even though you say it is.

I'll believe ya'

Why don't you take the hold down off and take a picture right there showing the distributor seated on the block?

A few washers, a grinder or file to shape them correctly and put them under the hold down and it'll sit more like you expect it to.

You just want to be sure it tightens down enough to prevent movement

And since nobody answered the gasket question................no gasket but there is an O ring that goes in a groove in the distributor housing and seals against the bore of the hole the distributor fits into.

Look at any picture/ad and you'll see the O ring

Based on the picture, I don't believe that the dizzy is fully seated. When I get home, I will take a photo of my DUI unit for comparison.

As mentioned above, while applying a little downward pressure with your hand, bump the starter and see if the dizzy doesn't move that last 1/4" down into place.

Now if one was to check the last photo in this quote from Malcolm2 a few years back, they might see the seated distributor sticking up above the flange just like Rob's does in his picture

I have install the new disty at a very similar angle as pictured above. The only adjustment I am going to have is distance between 2 posts at the water pipe. Have not tried to put the hose back on yet...

The disty cap had to be removed to get the unit to seat fully into the block.

any thoughts?

I installed one about 5 years ago in my brothers Supra, I do not remember the fit issue as you show it in these pictures. It was tight but it fit. The factory hold down worked just fine on the Supra install and we had enough room to adjust timing as needed.

Picture from my 1994 HO:

If felt around where the DUI meets the block. The hold-down ring on the dizzy shaft is almost flush with the top of the shoulder on the block. The lock-down collar doesn't seem to be tilted up as yours appears in the photo. [Pay no attention to the Ultra Black that oozed out during intake manifold installation. It looks like crap.]

Another option is to call DUI and see if they've had similar feedback from others.

Hmmm, idk, the two look to be sticking up the same. I went out to garage to check mine earlier. Two hours later I forgot why I went out there.

Sometimes you just have to see for yourself, so today I stopped at a friends place'

He had a bare 351W block and a DUI distributor for it getting ready to get put together for a land based vehicle..

We stuck it in and in case anybody is wondering if it was fully seated, it had no oil pump shaft and no camshaft to get in the way) so yes, fully seated

I took a picture, did some measurements and the flange stuck up 0.08 inches above the block.

You can also see the angle the hold down sits at when tight

Here's the picture

It looks a lot like JQ's picture, just closer up Looks a lot like Rob's too.

We filed down the top of the hold down so the bolt head sat flat on it

Nice work Ken. Looks like the DUI unit may be a little taller now than in some of the early pics posted causing the funky fit of the hold down. Either way if the dizzy is down the hold down should work just fine if your bolt is long enough to grab enough threads.
I hope DUI is watching this thread, they could change the Dist base shape on a CNC machine and fix this issue moving forward so tha part fits like the OEM dizzy.

I'm pretty sure mine is seated all the way:

+1

It sure looks fully seated in that latest photo. I was wrong in my earlier assumption that the dizzy wasn't fully seated. As always, KENO was correct in his diagnosis. Note to self: "never argue with KENO -- unless you're wearing your flameproof undies..."

Maybe a little grinding on the hold-down collar. Or, perhaps, a little longer bolt and some stainless steel washers to bring the hold-down collar more level.
