Loud Pipes Saves Lives. Copper mufflers are pretty popular these days!

Hahahaha. Figured somebody would laugh at that idea of mufflers. I had loud pipes on my Harley. No as a matter of fact I have not driven it yet. It’s been winterized so I’m doing some work on it right now. The previous owner said it was LOUD. Now I personally like a good sounding motor but not an obnoxious one. I’ll just wait and see how it sounds before making my mind up.

I like the idea of no mufflers. I remember as a kid there was an early '70's nautique on the lake. Sounded great. I'm restoring a '78 that has mufflers - thinking about removing them. You mentioned copper. I restored some 50's Chris Crafts and they just had copper. are you saying just copper pipe? Or should I go stainless?

You can easily find Stainless tubing with a 3 inch OD, not too easy at all to find copper with a 3 inch OD though. The copper has a 3 1/8 inch OD and Correct Craft swaged down the ends to be 3 inches on the copper they used with 3 inch ID hose. |

My '64 Dunphy with 312 Ford V8 has no mufflers. Instead, the 2 1/2" exhaust hose runs all the way out the transom tips. Makes for a nice, mellow, vintage sound.

Thanks. Tubing not pipe. Seems like Stainless is a little easier than reducing the copper to fit. Is their a sound difference? Copper more mellow? Or really no difference?

Some say yes, the copper has more of a mellow sound. I personally have never seen swaged copper. It's always been stretch the Rubber ID an extra 1/8". Maybe there's a picture of swaged copper exhaust tubing that CC used out there? |

Here's a picture that's tough to see from a David G post. You can barely make out the smaller diameter on each end of the tubes. And here's a thread in the link with a post from Art C telling what they did at the factory. I think you know who Art is. This was his early screen name It's about halfway down page 1 link I had a pair that were swaged down like that on a 76 SN but they're long gone and no pictures of my own. |

My 88 has stainless tubing. Gt40p heads, cam research ski cam, Quick fuel 650 carb. with the rpm air gap intake. I kinda like the sound. Can videos be included on here? If so how?

My 78 had no mufflers exhaust ran into the 3" Stainless, the OEM rotted out and I put the stainless in, bought from a local muffler shop. I loved the sound. At idle the exhaust was mostly under water and quiet. Above Idle it was loud, At 3,000 RPM cruise speed nobody in the back seat could converse with the people in the front seat.
The front seat was fine, the back seat had lots of noise but I loved the sound. |

You guys are great! Thanks for all the great advice. Very helpful.. As my ‘78 SN resto goes on you will hear from me again. I was able to find an “A Frame” Correct Craft trailer from another post. The certificate of ownership has Walter Maloon’s signature on it. Very cool.

There is also Shieldsflex II wet exhaust hose. Super tough. On my 67 straight hose no muffler
Sounds awesome. The rubber might make it a little softer sounding than metal with no mufflers. Use two SS clamps |

Having replaced exhaust with copper, stainless steel and straight hose on different boats with different engines, I can't tell the difference between any of them, other than they all sound good. Maybe a side by side comparison would reveal a different tone between them, but it would be subtle. Maybe someone makes mufflers for an old 2.5" system, but you may end up having to use reducers or replace your through hulls.

If you are in a cold climate that requires a winter layup, be careful using the reducers, water won't completely drain out of the mufflers. Not much water will stay in the mufflers but it's always safer to get as much out as possible. Raising the bow of the boat may be required. |
