I have a 1996 196 and PCM recomends using 40w40 the autoparts store does not carry it. I think we always used a common oil like 10w30 in my parents 88. Does everybody use 40w40 and where do you find it?

It might be called simply 40wt or SAE 40. If you do a search on the site here you'll find plenty of info on oils.

I use Castrol 40W in my 2000SN. Pep boys or Kragen both carry it.

I use 40wt in my 95 snob, as well as the 82SN. I would stick with PCM's recommendation....although if you want to use about anything, including used oil from your car run thourgh a coffee filter, you can probalby find someone that says it is the best!

my thought is... any oil is better than no oil.
I had the same problem, 40W hard to find. I used straight 30W when I changed the oil prior to winter storage. Does anyone see this as being an issue? I'd hate to have to drain it and re-fill with 40W prior to running it for the season is someone can't convince me otherwise. |

tnp,
I believe CC actually recommends 30W when the temp is below 50 Fahrenheit. I'm pretty sure I've read this somewhere, now whether that 50 is air or water temp I don't know... I have 30W in mine now from last winter. I've only taken it out twice this year, the water is real cold (40-45?). the temp gauge didn't get over 150 the last time I took it out, putting around most of the time, and a little WOT, stayed between 140-150. To me it seems like the 30W would be fine if not prefered in this situation. I will be changing over to 40w probably next time i take it out. I think it may start to warm up around here soon. |

40W should be relatively easy to find. I never see it at Wally world but in my area Nappa, Auto Zone, and Advanced Auto all have it.

Thanks guys.
When I went looking for oil the auto parts (stocker) said the closest they have to 40w40 would be 10w40 which he said its not really even close. So I went back and got 40w. |

Brent, FWIW I switched from straight 40w to 15w40 without any issues. Stick with a good brand like Shell Rotella-T or Valvoline Racing. The filter is also very important- stick with Motorcraft, Wix (NAPA) or Purolator. Stay away from Fram and Pennzoil.
