Henk, I used a rotary wire brush first and then wrapped an old belt with emory cloth to smooth the pitting inside the grooves

you may need to clean your flame arrestor as well...probably full of rubber

Are the belts riding too deep in the pulley groove or are they rding too high? You can remove the belts and take then to a parts store. They can measure then with a belt measuring tool and cross them to a wider or narrow belt of the right length. Brian

The pulley grooves don't look to smooth and yes there is black dust all over.

It is getting better.

How can I get the grooves better?

does any of you know the right type belt it seems the length is good but the whith not.

are the pulley grooves clean and smooth on the inside? if they're worn or pitted you'll have black rubber specs all over like munday said

Or if you see black belt pteces slung on to the dog house you may need to worry.I don't think belts get any better than gates green stripe.

I concur... Gates makes good belts. All belts will stretch a little when new. If you have to continually tighten them something else is wrong.

All V belts will stretch and then take a "set" to them. Auto mechanics will usually over tighten when putting on a new belt to compensate. Give them some more time.

I have 2 v-belts on my Ford 351 commodore 1978.

1. Gates auto master 6221 MC O.M
2. Gates auto master 6223 MC 6.A

After 2 hours drive I have to tigten them.

It looks like they are not strong.

Does any body know the origionals?
Or a better brand or better type?

Henk
