Our family is having a debate! After much "spiffing up" of our 87 2001 Nautique, it's time to start restoring carpet & the paint job. Can anyone tell me where we can SEE the original colors offered for our boat? Not fond of it's current wine color. Thanks!

That original "paint" is actually gel coat. Look under the reference section of the site (link at the top). There are brochures for pretty much every year.

You may not need to re-gel the boat at all...miracles have been accomplished by wetsanding old faded out gel, plenty of which are documented in these forums.

Thanks so much - I'll check that out.... we have wetsanded it before & it does shine up really nice - but seems to "fog up" again fairly quickly, which is our #1 reason for painting... but I'll check out the forums on that as well, to be sure we're doing it right. #2 reason is because the original owner (who not only trashed the boat, but wrecked it too) NAMED it (who names a ski nautique???) and no matter what we do, you still see "Napoleon" across the stern.... They used vinyl, but then peeled it off & the darker paint that was under the name is still there - annoying! (And yes I'm aware of all the "bad luck" regarding messing with boat names)#3 reason is we're just not huge "burgandy" fans... much more blue kind of folk

Youre not doing something correctly. Wetsanding followed by compound and polish removes oxidation in the gel and smooths it out- so it should be as shiny and deep as it was in 1987, if not more so. Matching the original color can sometimes prove tricky, as gel will fade over time- and if left unprotected, it will fade all the way through. Meaning, you may not be able to restore the color 100% (or the ghosting of old decals, etc). But many times you can. Of course, a boat needs to be protected from the sun to prevent fading and oxidation, so you should keep a healthy coat of wax and a good cover over the boat (preferably including the sides) if you want to keep it looking its best.

Paint is much thinner and softer than gelcoat, so it is not nearly as durable. If you really dislike the color that much, my recommendation would be to sell the boat and buy a new one- it will be much cheaper in the long run. Painting your boat will be expensive and will have a significant negative impact on its resale value.

Hollywood is the resident expert on 2001 colors... hopefully he'll chime in soon. Most brochures show/list the standard color options, but '87 is one of the few that did not. '88 does, though Im not sure if all of the color options were the same- though I suspect most were.

Thanks so much for all of the help - this site has helped me tons on engine repairs, but I've never posted my own question - you are all very appreciated! So is it not possible to put a new gel coat of a different color over the existing? I never meant I would actually use paint - I know better - but at the same time, completely ignorant of the process, so thought you could just have it re-coated with another color... is that not possible / crazy expensive?

I've put too much time into this one to ever let it go. We've had it for years, but life (and younger brother / rough driver) has gotten in the way. Now that my son wants more water time, it's time for us to make our own boat top notch and stop skiing with everyone else all the time. Have the engine tip-top thanks to our local dealer & now we want to make it look as good as it runs. All this beautifying is in the talking (arguing) stage - nothing would happen til end of season, probably.

Ahh, sounds like a terminology issue.

Yes, you can spray new gel over the existing. Any damage (cracks, etc) would need to be fixed before hand, otherwise they will telegraph through the new gel. It certainly wouldnt be an inexpensive undertaking to pay someone to do the whole boat- but doing just the colored stripe would be a lot less work. Either way wont be "cheap" though, Im afraid.

I am confused Hollywood. Why do you have Tims boat under your name?

I agree with Tim. Sounds like something wasn't done properly in the stages of sanding/buffing. Here is my boat that had major fading and ghosting, all taken care of with sandinding 800/1000/1200 and buffing in three steps.

At the end of the day, it's your boat. Here's a link for my http://www.correctcraftfan.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=17166 - thread
. All my info came from this site. It lists all the part numbers for everything I needed.

Don,
Kevin sold his 54' Miamian and bought Tims boat. It's not as nice to sleep in but he's making due with the smaller boat.
