Hi,

I have read lots of threads here about the correct size packing for different Ski Nautiques, but I am still not sure what to use. Most 80's models seem to use 3/16" while most 90's use 1/4". My 1989 was just between the two.

If I measure the inside diameter of the packing nut (where it is threaded), it is 37mm. The shaft diameter is 1" - 25.4mm.

So, half of the difference is 5.8mm.

So does that mean that I should use the 1/4" (6.35mm) or the 3/16" (4.76mm).

I'm guessing the 1/4" is correct?

It looks like 1/4" was in there previously, but it is quite squashed.

It the packing meant to be very loose on the shaft until you tighten the nut? Or quite a tight fit from the start (before tightening)?

Thanks,
Greg

Was it a tight fit, between the nut and shaft?

If you put 3/16" packing in a gland that needs 1/4", you will know it very quickly!

I would recommend you buy both if youre not comfortable measuring either the gland or old packing.

Thanks - I have both :) I'll try the 3/16" first...

Should the packing fit between the nut and shaft be quite tightly (snug)? Or should it be loose until the nut is tightened?

I was just looking at the packing nut assembly...

I measured the inside of the gland, when the nut is turned off, and the inside diameter is 26.3mm... so the clearance to the 1" shaft is very little!

So there will only be around 0.5mm gap between the shaft and the packing gland.

Is this normal? See the photo below.

Nothing like some mixed units to confuse the issue.

Edit: brainfart... see below!

26.3mm = 1.035"

Add 3/16" packing all the way around a 1" shaft and you have an OD of 1.375" (1-3/8").

Thats a 3/16" gland.

Thanks :)

But is it normal that the inside of the glands is just a fraction bigger than the shaft? Shaft = 1", Narrowest part of gland = 1.035"

Now, looking at the nut, if I measure the ID of the nut, I get 1.46" (see photo below). So isn't 1" + 2x(1/4" packing) = 1.5" not better?

Sorry, brainfart. I forgot to note the extra zero... I was thinking 1.35".

You are absolutely correct- if the ID of the nut is 1.46 (green arrow), then you need 1/4" packing.

No worries on the ID of the gland itself being 1.035" (red arrow above). The shaft does not touch it- it rides on the packing inside.

Excellent, thanks ;-)

I just thought the tolerance for the gland was a bit tight... I see that on the old shaft, it looks like it may have touched the gland - it is a bit polished. It is badly scored where the packing rope was (red arrow), and a bit polished further back (green arrow). See the photo below.

I just tried installing the 1/4" packing in the gland... I had the nut loose - put in the packing, and tried to push it over my old shaft, from the taper end.

It fits really tight - just the nut with packing (i.e. not tightened at all)! Is this correct? I can't just slide it onto the shaft, I have to work it on. How easily should the packing turn on the shaft?

Thanks,
Greg

With 1/4" I can only fit in 2 layers of packing.

So I just tried 3/16" and just packed it into the nut - it has some play on the shaft, but it I start tightening the packing nut a bit, it tightens on the shaft - so do yo guys think that 3/16" is probably correct? I can fit 3 or 4 layers.

Greg,
Go for the 3/16". Put some time on the boat and keep a close eye on the gland while the packing conforms to the shaft. Don't let it get very hot.

HI - I'm getting ready to pack the shaft of my 89 SN. Did you end up using the 3/16" or 1/4" size? Thanks.

It is likely that you need 3/16" packing. CC / Nautique did not go to the 1/4" packing until sometime after the year 2001 or 2002.

^^dangerous assumption right there. Have seen little consistency on packing sizes. Best to measure the gland or old packing, or order both sizes if unsure.

If you have time, reach out to Skidim.com. I just bought packing for my rudder port assembly. I tried to order both 3/16" and 1/4". They called before they shipped stating that CC was only using 3/16" for these. Seemed to know exactly what they were talking about. Not sure of rudder packing would be same as drive shaft-- but might be worth a phone call?? My boat is an '88 Martinique for what it is worth. Good news is that this material is really cheap if you did need to experiment.

Good luck on search of info and assembly!

The size may or may not be the same size hence the warning from Tim. Measure the prop shaft gland to be sure.

I didn't see this mentioned but when putting in the three layers be sure to stagger the butted ends so they do not line up.
