Hello everyone,
This will be a thread documenting the rebuild of our families 1st Correct Craft. First I will start this thread out with some background information.

I was lucky enough to grow up in a family that enjoys the outdoors and have parents and grandparents that have a can do attitude. Both of my grandfathers and my father are very handy and can build/fix just about anything.   As a result, I was witness to many different projects growing up and know I feel like I always need to have some type of project going on. They also made it possible to start waterskiing and boating at a very early age and that engrained my love of the water and boating. As far as boats our family has always has had I/0 or outboard boats so this will be our first adventure with a direct drive.

A few years ago I found correct craft fan website and thought that restoring a correct craft would be a fun project someday.   So I would watch the for sale section and check craigslist searching for the right deal or a diamond in the ruff.

Then in the summer of 2015 I decided that I would make the trip over to Green Lake on a Friday night to look at all the boats in person when they were on displayed at the boat show as a part of the Green Lake Reunion.   My parents decided that they would tag along with me and my daughter and we could go for dinner afterwards.   The show was great and it was awesome to see all the different models side by side.   I took a lot of pictures for reference and then we then left and went to dinner.   At dinner I could tell my mom and dad we’re also getting the Correct Craft bug.   There was a beautiful Inca Gold Barracuda at the show that was for sale for $3500.00 and my Dad said “Should I go and buy that Barracuda?”   On the way home from dinner my parents were talking a little more seriously about selling their pontoon that they hardly ever use and replace it with a correct craft. A few weeks went by and my dad said “hey Jake keep your eyes open for an older correct craft and maybe I will buy it if you think it’s a good deal and you do the work to restore it”.   That sounded like a great offer to me.

Fast forward to June of 2016 and I found an 81 Ski Nautique that I thought had some potential for a project. So I made a phone call to see if they were firm on the price.   I was informed that the price was firm, so that dream kind of died.   I continued to watch that boat and others on craigslist throughout the summer and no purchases were made.   Around Labor Day I jumped back on craigslist so see if the 81 was still for sale.   It wasn’t but I still had the contact information. I gave them a call they said the boat was still for sale and the price was now negotiable.   The next day my mother and I went to look at that boat and a few others.   We first looked at an 85 ski nautique that was in way better shape and the price was considerable higher.   That boat looked good but I followed Morfoot’s instructions for checking stringers and checked the cradle bolts with torque wrench and found that the stringers were most likely rotten so we decided to pass.    We got back in the car to go and look at the 81.   When we arrived to look at the 81 it was in rough shape and I knew it needed a lot of work.   We hooked up a hose and it fired right up. I then though about it for a few minutes; I knew I was not going to buy it for the asking price. It was the end of the summer so I made an offer that I thought could have been little insulting and was almost a little afraid to say it.   What do you know, they accepted the offer.   I called my dad and said “I found a Correct Craft, if you don’t buy it I am going to”.   The next day the 81 was brought to its new home.

The plan is to keep it mostly original but the brown color scheme has to go.   The color of the new stripe has yet to be determined and is open to suggestions.

Over the course of the winter of 2017 we have stripped the nautique of most of its hardware and have refinished the teak parts.

The last few weeks have gotten busier since the weather has started to break a little bit here in Wisconsin.

We have removed the engine with our high tech engine puller.

We have also started the grinding process. The floor and all of the foam (except the air box) has been removed to we can measure and blueprint the stringers. The stringers in this boat are absolutely shot.   Pretty much all of the foam within 1 to 2 inched from the hull of the boat was completely saturated. I think we have removed about 6 construction sized garbage bags of foam so far.   I found that a small drywall saw works wonders for removing the foam.

Great start on a great project. Looks like it's in capable hands. Brown was a hot color back in the early 80's,looks to be trying to make a comeback in the new G series boats too. Done right and within reason just about any color will look good, but reds and blues always seem most popular. Good luck with it and keep us updated!

Jacob,
Love the project and your endeavor! Yes, keep the pictures coming. Before you remove any hull side graphics, trace them since the tracing can be used for a paint mask if you do restore the hull.

Jake, Go Blue or Go Home!! There is an electronic file in the reference section for the 81' Graphics, make it easy to get a gerbermask cut.

Here is a fine example of a Blue 81'

In the registration packet from the previous owner we found an old business card from Watercraft Sales in Three Lakes that I though was kind of cool.

There is no date on the card so I don't know if it was originally sold there or if it was just there for some service.

I believe that is where Pete B. worked. I think I see him in the photo putting -100 antifreeze in come engines for winterization.

I too vote for brown, but if I were changing it, I would go with Orange or Tangerine. Tim B. had Christines Marine, in Orlando, a site sponsor build him an original Red interior for his 1980 SN. They were able to reproduce the stamped in design into the vinyl . I do not think Tim has finished the project yet, since he has a few to do, but an original interior would be smoking. Not cheap in price but it would be correct.

Actually, the picture is too recent. When I was there the big storage shed with Watercraft painted on the front wasn't built yet.

I made a little progress on the 81 this weekend.   The stringers and air box are now removed.   The secondary stringers came out pretty easy but the primaries were a beast to remove. The tops of the stringers were pretty soft but I should be able to use the bottoms for templates for the new stringers.   I also now understand when others say that grinding under the front deck is not on there top ten list of fun things to do.

More grinding to follow.

We have been making a little progress on the 81 so I will show some updates.

The swim platform and teak pieces have also been refinished.   We lightly sanded them and then applied 5 to 6 coats of Watco teak oil.

Obviously it would not be original, buy that particular graphic looks awesome in just about any color. We've seen it in lime green, and bright orange. I particularly like the bright orange, but, course, I like orange. Alan's blue graphics look awesome, but I do't think it is original blue. Been a few years since I saw Alan's boat, but it seemed there was some sparkle or metal flake in the blue he used.

Anyway, search around there are photos. I think its one of the few graphics you could do in almost any color.

I really like the graphic on the 1980 and 1981 ski nautiques so we will keep the graphic original.   So far we have narrowed the graphic colors down to non original colors of navy blue or red or factory colors of marlin blue and the brown may still make its return.

I also contacted them about this boat. Rude group at that shop and you really never did know if they wanted to sell it for the Lady or keep it for themselves. Glad to see it will be put to good use. Like the Brown as well as it is a very cool color on that hull.

I haven't had a lot of time to work on the 81 lately between honey do protects and taking the family boating earlier this weekend, but I did make a little progress.   All the the wood that is going back into the boat has had two coats of total boat cpes from n
Jamestown applied.   This is the first time I have used the product and the application was very easy.   Hopefully I will have more exciting progress to report next time.

The primaries are now bedded and fillets are complete.   I bedded them with Total Boat Thixo 2:1 epoxy and the fillets where done with epoxy and cabosil (peanut butter).   I decided to use the Thixo for bedding the stringers because I was working alone and on a time crunch.   I also used the cradle to help bed the stringers and position them in the correct location.   I put some spacers between the cradle and the stringers to account for the thickness of the fiberglass that will be installed.   Don't mind the dirty cradle, I will get it cleaned up before it is installed.

I have a lot of the glass cut and hopefully I will get it installed tonight or early this week.

I am planning on refoaming the boat and reinstalling a fiberglass floor. For those of you that have gone this direction can you give me an idea on how many layers of fiberglass I need to lay on the floor. I was thinking I would use three layers of 1708 is that enough, is it overkill or should I be considering another weight of glass?

Posted By: ultrahots
Date Posted: June-23-2017 at 11:00pm
When I did my 87 I used 3 layers in different thickness. I think it was a 10.6 to a 6. ? I still have extras of all 3 rolls in the shed for my 80 when I get to it. I used 4lb foam. Floor is solid as a rock.

Terry, after the 4lb foam hardened up but before you layed the glass did you have to be carefull about setting anything on it or stepping on it to avoid impacts or is it pretty solid?

It has been about a month since my last update so here is a quick update of the progress I have made.

The stringers are completely glassed in.   I do have to do some touch up work to finish but for the most part they are done.   I decided to add an additional bulk head forward of the where the battery box is located.   Since the battery box seems like it could be a possible point of weakness for water intrusion I thought that it couldn't hurt to have the extra bulk head to keep the foam in the bow the boat dry incase of a failure.   I am a long way from being done with this restoration but it feels good to have this portion of the project almost complete.

Next up is to install the battery box, finish the plumbing.

Here is a quick update.

The plumbing is now complete.   We used schedule 40 gray electrical conduit for the air hoses and the steering and electrical pipe.   We were able to use a conduit oven to heat up the air pipes so they were pliable and we could form them to where we wanted them with out any fittings.   We had to use a 60 degree fitting for the steering and electrical pipe because we couldn't make the bend with causing a kink in the pipe.

https://flic.kr/p/XTsWBu" rel="nofollow"> [

I should have included a picture of what it look like before we started pouring the foam but I forgot to take one.

Posted By: Wisky Badger
Date Posted: August-27-2017 at 9:40pm
I was also able to get the front floor section installed along with all of the floor foam and the air box. I decided to keep the front floor section set back a little way from the hull and fill the void with foam.

https://flic.kr/p/XTsVvS" rel="nofollow"> [

The next step will be to do some touch up work on the foam and fair the surface.

Just in case you are wondering I did not install wooden ribs between the secondary stringers and the hull.   What you see is a piece of pink closed cell foam that was cut to form a rib in order to help level the top of the pour foam.

So my driver's seat base needs to be repaired, which should not be a big deal.

The way the seat base was molded it looks like it should have a piece of wood recessed into it and then mounted to the floor.   Can anyone tell me if this is the case.

https://flic.kr/p/YmJLHM" rel="nofollow"> [

https://flic.kr/p/YzhEqe" rel="nofollow"> [

I was thinking of fiberglassing another wood pad to the main deck where the driver seat goes so that when I screw it down the screws won't penetrate the main deck. It would increase the seat height a very small amount.   Has anyone done this and do you see any problems with that idea.

Posted By: TRBenj
Date Posted: September-10-2017 at 11:12am
I wouldn't do that. Just install it as the factory did, but take care to seal the screws while installing. 4200/5200 will do it.

Your pedestal is not missing any pieces. If the wood glasses in as backers for the seat are mush, cut them out and replace.

The floor and air box are now finished.   I ended up laying down 3 layers of 1708 to get the thickness I was looking for.   I have also started fairing the bilge.   I have the first coat down and have it sanded.   Hopefully I will finish up the fairing this week.

Thanks for the encouragement. I am located in South Central Wisconsin. I am pretty sure that was not the previous owners name.   I will have to pull the old registration card to check.   The boat was purchased about a year ago and we didn't really start digging into the project until March 2017.

I have started to wet sand the hull with using 600, 800, 1000 wet sandpaper.   I will follow that up with 3M Perfect-It™ Gelcoat Heavy Cutting Compound, 3M Finesse it II and then 3M Perfect-It wax.

The transom is done.   I started there to test the system and see the results I could get.   The gel coat came back very nice and has a nice luster.   Hope fully the last picture will show the results.   I think it will look a lot better once the colors are painted back on. There is still enough ghosting from the old paint that I should be able to tape off the old design.

Take a bunch of measurements of what you have before you start cutting them out!!!

Also take a lot of photos that you can reference before you start removing them.

I do have some blue prints I made for mine on graph paper.   They are not the best but they might help you as reference material. If I can find them I will be happy to share them with you. Send my your email in a PM and I will send them to you as a PDF.

Dropping the seats off at the upholster was the first thing I have done to the boat since it was was wet sanded and buffed last fall.    I got busy with hunting seasons last fall and downhill skiing this winter so the boat project was put on the back burner until now.   Hopefully I will be posting a lot of updates in the next few months.   The goal is for the boat to be complete by Memorial Day which is when boating season really starts for me in Wisconsin.

I am working on some ideas for the speedos tonight and hopefully will have an update tomorrow.

I wanted to find an alternative to restoring the old air guides because I am not a fan of the additional holes in the transom needed for the tubes. I decided to go with Faria GPS units and was able to make them fit in the airguide housing in an attempt to try and maintain somewhat of an original look. If I find time I will post of video of how they fit in the old airguide housing if anyone is interested. If this doesn't work or if someone in the future wants it to be original I will still be able to use the airguides.

I still need to remove the other gauges and finishing buffing the dash but I think it will look good once everything is cleaned up.

For those of you that have repainted your stripes can you please help me out with a few questions? Does the gelcoat needed to be sanded where the stripes are before before I repaint them in ordet to get proper adhesion and do I need to use primer? If I do need to sand again what grit should I be using. I am planning on using Pettit ez proxy for the paint.    I have all ready wet sanded and buffed the whole boat.

I thought I saw a thread last year with one of the orange promos being restored and it looked they they where just painting over a very clean gel coat.   Thanks for the help.

If you buffed the gel smooth then yes, sand where you are going to paint. I would tape then sand. Otherwise it will be tough to get your gel shiny right next to the paint. I’d go with 400 and see how that works in a test spot. Seems to have been enough for us but we haven’t put it to the test. You only have one color so sanding in between coats isn’t as important but the paint mfg say to lightly sand between coats. At the end, sand with 1500 or even 2000 and polish lightly. Then wax.

I really like the speedos! You do clean work! Putting them in the original air guide housings is a really nice touch. I am assuming they don’t compensate for say a river current? It’s just your overland speed that is measured, yes? Also is there a GPS antenna that you had to mount somewhere?

For anyone reading this that is also considering a gps speedometer conversion, be aware that Nauticlogic makes a retrofit kit that converts the original Airguides and maintains the original look 100%. A number of us have been running them for years- they are excellent.

Have their prices come down? Their kit for 2 speedos is $375 which seems very reasonable. No need for #2 to be a dummy at that price.

Thanks for the advice on sanding.   I think I will tape all the areas that need to be sanded and then re tape before I paint to make sure I get a nice clean line.

There are not any additional GPS antenna with the Faria GPS system, everything is self contained in the Speedo.   I dont think the will compensate for river current like a paddle wheel will. They probably are not as high quality as the Nauti logic kits but they are a lot cheaper.   I think I picked them up on sale from Cabelas for about $70.00 each vs. $375.00 from Nauti logic.   This will probably be a case of you get what you pay for but I wanted to put the cost savings toward a new prop.

Tim, is the acme 540 the correct prop to run with this boat?

I got my best lines from some fine line tape from China. It is on amazon. I bought some more expensive tape from 3M and this outperformed it. Description below. Comes in different widths. ~1/8” did letters great. Used frisked over that. Takes a while to get here so order an extra roll!

I am guessing correct craft didn't sand before painting because it is a huge pain in the a$$ and is very labor intensive.   It wasn't fun taping everything for sanding and then re taping everything for paint.    If I ever do it again I will do it the original way and see how it turns out.

I didn't use the graphics from the reference section but they are a great resource.   I had enough ghosting from the old paint in the gel coat that I was able to use it as a guide.

-turned corners much better
-didn't adhere as much making removal easier (I had to tape over cured paint when doing my black outline)

I have a few spots that I need to touch up where the paint bleed through the tape and also still have to add the black accent line on the top and bottom of the stripe.

I have a some questions on mounting the engine cradle.

1) Should I drill the pilot holes and apply CPES allowing it to cure before installing the lag bolts or do I apply the CPES and install lag bolts immediately?

2) Should I also apply 4200 to the lag bolts to help seal them?

I also will be installing a new cutlass bearing in the strut.   I plan on removing the strut so I can re bed the strut in 4200 and make sure my alignment is correct. Is there any reason why I would want to install the cutlass while the strut is still attached the the boat?

Jacob,
I would allow the CPES to partially cure before running the lags in but, make it all soaked into the wood and there isn't a puddle at the bottom. If there is, you'll need to redrill the pilot hole.

Yes on the 4200 to completely seal the holes.

Replacing the cutlass will be easier with the strut removed.

Subscribed! looks killer, I started my build about 2 years ago but it ended up on the back burner because I bought a tunnel hull for fishing tournaments and that got bumped ahead. Finally have all the glass and body work done on that build and excited to get back to the correct craft! If you ever found the prints you had drawn up for the stringers I would live to take a look at them. some of my measurements and pics have gotten lost over the years.

Today we did some engine work, installed a new cutlass bearing and reinstalled the strut.   This is a picture of the alignment, I think it came out pretty good.

Now I have to get the new coupling on the shaft.   Do you guys think a gas grill will work to bring the coupling up to temp or is an oven a better option?   Also am I shooting for a temp of 400 degrees or 500 degrees?   I would have went with an double taper shaft but the shaft we had was straight so I thought I should just use it.   I am not looking forward to this step of the process.

Jacob,
Yes, it's looking fantastic. Great job.

The gas grill will do it just make sure the coupling is in it long enough. I'd say 30 to 45 minutes on high. Don't put the coupling directly over a flame. Since you have the engine out, you will have the luxury of getting the coupling on the shaft outside the boat.

Good rule of thumb for coefficient of expansion for your steel coupling would be:
.0000064 per inch per degree Fahrenheit
So if you measured your shaft and the coupling and came up with a .002 interference fit at ambient temp then 325f degrees should make the i.d. grow .00208"
500f should make it grow .0032"
I would shoot for around 400f (.00256") and freeze the end of the shaft also.
Work fast and put a split collar on the shaft for a stop block so the collar will stop at right place.
I am not a Mechanical Engineer but I know where to look for the data.
Other ME's are welcome to pipe in here

Long story short: use 400f or 500f and you should be OK

It has been awhile since my last update so I will post a quick update.

We have the engine back in the boat and where able to get it all aligned.   We test ran it on trailer using a bucket of water and it ran great after waking her up from a 21 month siesta.

https://flic.kr/p/K8YCae" rel="nofollow">

Last Saturday we transferred the boat to a Supra trailer while the Correct Craft trailer is getting sandblasted and painted.   Hopefully the trailer will be ready by the end of the week.

https://flic.kr/p/28Hw44G" rel="nofollow"> r

The goal is still to have the boat and trailer ready for Green Lake on the 13th and 14th.   There is not a lot left to do besides install the new windshield, install the seats and take it for a shakedown run but I am running short on time with other things going on. I will post some better overview pictures once she gets back on the correct craft trailer and her seats are installed.

The boat is finally back in the water.   I missed getting it ready for Green Lake by about four days, we will try and make it next year.

I built a rear bench to add a little storage.   I made it removable with some threaded inserts installed in the removable floor panel to make it easier to service the boat or if you wanted to remove it if you didn't need the rear seat for the day.
