Subject: bad Shift cable or Control?

Just purchased a 98 SN last week and have been going thru it. The control is a single MV Teleflex and was very stiff when I bought the boat. I have taken the control out and completely cleaned and greased it per the great posts on hear about this. I also aligned the cable at the transmission a little straighter and that has helped some but still very stiff.
If I disconnect the cable from the transmission it is much easier but no where as smooth as my 84 SN 2001. the transmission shifts with a finger tip, very easy.

I have new cables I ordered but I don't want to replace them if it may be the control that is the problem.

A couple of questions.
1. If the cables are black and not red, does that indicate they have already been changed once?
2. Is there any part of the control that could still be giving me troubled after cleaning, It seemed to be very smoot when I had it back together with no cables installed.
Would appreciate any thoughts or ideas anyone has???

Marty

Does your transmission linkage shift easily/smoothly with the cable disconnected?
Same question for the throttle linkage?

If the answer is "yes" to both, then you either have a bad cable or some type of impingement in the cable run causing the cable to bind-up.

Jonny,
Thanks for the reply. The lever on the transmission is very easy to move with one finger when the cable is removed at the transmission.
Think I will pull the control again today and see how the cables move without being connected on either end.
I have not found many complaints about this Single MV control in the forums other than the set screw coming loose. This was also an issue when I bought the boat. Fixed that but still very stiff. My control looks like the one on NP.com

Cant seem to find anything for diagrams or parts lists for this control here or online with google. ????

Just an update to my own question.
I Pulled the control out and disconnected the cables on both ends. they both seemed to be pretty free with little resistance. Until I compared them to the brand new cables I had. New was much smoother even if I coiled them up to simulate the turns they would make in the boat.
I also took the control apart again and verified it all looked good and was well lubed. Installed the new cables and control ends and it is now smooth as silk and very easy to use.
One note though. Took it out on the water and after about 5 minutes testing the control stuck in forward and would not go back to neutral. I was able to feel around the control and wiggle the cables to get it to move. It felt like the cotter key was sticking on something.
Pulled it apart again when I got home and this is what I found. The new cable ends I purchased with the cables from NPcom were longer than the old ones. Causing the end to catch on a part as it moved by and preventing return to neutral. Put the old ends back on and reinstalled. See pictures

New one installed. It hits the brass colored bar while going back towards neutral.

they must have allowed for shimming on the backside with the added length. good catch! no pun intended!

I thought of that but on the shifter connection on top of the control there was also a clearance issue with the total height of the part. I contacted NP parts to see what they say. The part is listed for the MV2, so maybe is OK for them. But mine is the Single MV like the one NP sells.

Looks like they may have sold you the wrong ones. There must be different ones either in application or manufacturer. I did not know there were different ones but it does explain why there are some that have the ends sawed off in my stash of parts I have harvested.

You sure you have a MV1 and not a 2?

Gary,
I did find that BoatUSA has multiple sized pivots based on different series telex controls and dimensions.

Hollywood.
I'm not sure exactly what to call it. PN parts has one for sale called a "Single MV Teleflex. It has the push button in the middle of the handle. Everything I can find on this forum calls out an MV-1 or MV-2 and both of those have a button off to the side for throttling up without shifting into gear.
I have read other posts about the same one I have in my 98 SN but have yet to find any info on manuals or teardown and fixing them. Was pretty easy to do but amazing the lack of information out there.

CCF is a great forum and I love all the knowledge and help that is here. .

Yes both MV 1 & 2 can disengage the shifting mechanisms for throttle advancement.

MV2 has that safety collar under the knob for locking out accidental shifting. MV 1 does not.

Correct Craft changed over to the MV2 during the 1988 model year build.

Mv1 and mv2 were the old Morse control nomenclatures, which predates the merger with teleflex. This is a different animal.
