hey evrybody,
i was out on the lake this weekend in my friends 1996 sport nautique for a day wakeboarding trip. on our way to the cove where were headed for i happened to look over and see a capzized mastercraft!i know this lake like the back of my hand and i could tell that he took the corner to sharp-the corner was a gradual descent not a drop off-hit the bottom lost control and hit the rocks.you know what that equals?S.O.L.!so on the way back from the cove back to the marina we happin to be cruzin at a steady 30,just passin people.this is a sturday keep in mind wakes are huge.and we see a 25' tri toon BLOW by us! we give em the look and go. we cathc up to him at 50mph!while the no wake zone gets closer the sport nautique keeps windin up! we get to 60 before we have to stop. we're in the no wake zone and we ask what in the hell were u runnin.he proceeds to answer
400 small block!it was a smokercraft paradise. and it just conclude a great day at the lake!

I'm confused on which part I was to laugh at. I sure don't think any boat in trouble is funny no matter what brand it is. It must be the part where the 25' tritoon blew by you

Will I don't mean to diss but a stock sport nautique will do about 47 on the best day of its life lightly loaded. You would need to basically double the horsepower or install an outdrive to hit 60, I would check the calibration on those speedos. You would still get passed by quite a few of the tritoons on my lake at 60 though, if only I could find room in the back yard I think it would be funny if I had a big ass barge that I only referred to as "my fast boat"

Will ...what engine is in the sport to get it to 60 mph, theres not a stock motor that CC ever used that would get them over the lower 50's, and mine out runs quinner's easily.

the tri toon isn't an inboard it's call an I/O, inboard/outboard, or sterndrive and is very common today no big deal.

Oh Boy Chris, you know the only reason you were able to "slightly" edge me out was because my coolers were filled beyond thier capacity plates and I forgot to pull my anchor up, I will give you one thing, on the way out of the sand bar at Green Lake you were able to knock the top off that young lady in your back seat, now that's some power!

Joe, if CC/PCM ever offers a Supercharger on a SN I will be talking to my dealer about a trade-in!

Hey, Will. Please consider my point about your original post not being a laughing matter. My wife and I were injured on Saturday when I ran my Nautique up on rocks. Read my post below and you can see why I'm sensitive. You should really think about the guys in the Mastercraft and how they could have been injured. What if it was you? See below and I hope you understand what I'm saying to you:

It's difficult to put my thoughts into words. My accident could have been a lot worse, but thank God my wife and cousin are OK. JBear and I were just on the phone sorting things out. John reminded me that accidents do happen and we have to learn from them. Never in my boating history have I ever had such a traumatic experience. All that I can really say is, take the extra time to know the lake.

I suffered from a concussion when my head hit the windshield and split both of my knees open. My wife had pain in her neck and head. I thank God my boat took the hit, versus my cousin Eric skiing into the rocks. Everyone is doing better. I still have some pain, but will be OK.

I want to thank Jeff Kostis for coming to our aid. I understand Brad helped out as well. I also thank a nice couple in their pontoon boat and a gentleman that threw anchor and helped me to my platform. The Fire Dept, Ambulance, Hospital, Marine Patrol and Police did a great job too. I don't recall much, but they were great!

As far as the boat goes, I believe it saved us from further injuries. The tracking fins took the major damage, followed by the prop. The hull has some scratches, but nothing major. I believe the flex in the windshield saved my head. I firmly believe that if my boat was cheap quality, the hull would have split in half and the rocks would have come through the floor, causing more injury.

i was not aware of the fact that you had such a dramatic accident and i wish u best wishe to getting better but i knew for a fact that the people in the master craft were all rescued and ok the boat had not been haulin around the corner they had just cruised around and caught some land which forced em into the rocks.they got out and the boat took on water.im sorry for bein a dick on the matter.but i had no intention on the mastercraft story bein "funny" its was just there.maybe it should have been a seperate post.....

Speaking of coolers over thier capacity plates, my friend dan spent about 20 minutes the other day trying to get a configuration where he could fit 24 cans into the built in cooler on my 2001 and close the top. He found a few ways to fit 22 but so far nothing doing with 24, I think he was going to model it up in solid works and play with it.. he really wanted that full case.

Hyperlite seriously I am not trying to be insulting or discourage a new poster, you did touch a raw nerve with Ken when you included a run aground boat in a post with a t*tle about laughing at something, but i assume that was unintentional. You can check out the correct craft brocure for a 96 sport nautique on this site, top speed 47.5. Its really hard to make these things go fast because your always draggin so much hull and appendage. (not that 47.5 isnt fast) You might get an extra mile an hour every 10-15 horsepower you add. Now an 89 with a 454 and a blower with the right prop that could see 55 or so but you might want to put a bigger gas tank in.

Hey Ken,

Glad everyone is going to be ok. It has to be a terrible thing to go through crashing your pride & joy and worse, seeing the people you love hurt(as well as yourself). Hope the road to recovery is short & that your nautique can be fixed. We will all hopefully put that in the back of our minds & remember how quickly things can go wrong on the water.

CCxHYPERLITEx,
An 89 2001 is an awesome boat the classic 2001 series hull with better interior and resins than the earlier years, with the 454 it is very rare and desireable. Glad you enjoy it, welcome to the site... and go Hyperlite or go home I always say...

Tell me how this is a problem If it was me trying to fit a case of beer in the cooler, I would have been two short anyway because I would have downed at least two before I finished packing a loading up the boat. Never a problem for me

Were they regular cans or the Coors Light/Keystone variety? Sometimes this makes a difference.

They were not of the coors light persuasion.

We have a pretty firm policy of starting anyone that is going to be drinking with a can in a koozie in hand when we leave the dock (I usually have one extra as well in the cup holders on my dash) I just hate it when ten seconds off the dock the cooler ends up 1/3 empty. Getting a full case in the cooler is more of an OCD issue than anything else...

Ken,

Thanks for turning a decidedly rough 1st post for the young man in a positive direction. As we've all discussed many times, boating is for all ages. I can already see the young man's posts turning in the right direction.

CCxHYPERLITEx, you can learn a lot from folks on this site, and have a lot of fun. I'm sure you can teach us old farts a thing or two about wakeboarding. Just keep it cool and I'm sure you'll have a great time discussing these great boats.

Obviously, we don't promote drinking and boating here either..especially with impressionable 15 year olds around.
Some things are best left unsaid, or in this case, untyped.

absolootlee troo...I just wish I had a Nautique when I was 16, although I did give my dad's pure hell for a few summers.

Now, back to how many beers can fit into any given boat cooler! We used to take the pontoon boat with a keg and ski around it. Don't know how well that would go over anymore. A DUI on water now counts against our driver's license...bummer.

Hey Will,

Thanks for understanding. I'm sure you're a nice guy that means well. We're all here because we have something in common, boating. Whether somebody owns a Nautique, Mastercraft, Sears Gamefisher, we wish each other the best. I look forward to seeing you grow into the Correct Craft community and some day talk about your first Correct Craft purchase. We'll all still be here to help you. Just consider what you're going to type and submit. We are all ent*tled to our own thoughts, views and options, but making light of somebody's misfortunes is wrong. I stink at wakeboarding, so I'll need some advice from you how to improve!

Ken,

Sorry to hear of your mishap and glad to hear everyone is going to be OK. Many years ago I had a mishap not unlike yours, I was skiing behind my 77' when my buddy (Brownie) ran through a rock bed, the boat made it through the extreme shallow and he pulled back the throttle, as I slowed down on my ski unaware why we had stopped I hit the rocks and did a couple tumbles. I ended up in about 8" of water, bleeding but mostly OK. Took us a while to get the boat back to deep water literally had to carry by the teak floating the bow back to deeper water. Scratched up ski, bent prop and shaft but able to drive back to launch. The craziest part of the story comes on the way home, in bumper to bumper traffic some guy rear ends me and ends up under my boat, subsequently he damages the damaged parts and picks up the tab for the repairs. Who would have thought gettin it from behind could be a good thing?

Chris,

That's one heck of an experience. You're lucky you didn't get seriously injured. It's amazing how I've recently discovered how many people have had boating accidents. We don't really discuss it. It just really makes me more aware of the dangers of boating. I'm sure you'll never forget that incident. Glad everything worked out. Thanks for the story.

Since we are trying to keep people on thier toes by recalling our less than spectacular boating moments...

When I was about 8 or 9 we were skiing up at our camp behind my uncles 13 ft mirrocraft with a 35 horsepower mercury it was at that time common practice for us to take off from the dock ski about a mile down, ski about a mile back and then cut the boat in hard just past the raft towards the dock and then at the last minute cut hard back out leaving the skier with the ability to let go and glide in, sometimes spraying the dock, sometimes attempting to sit down on the dock just as they came to a stop and started to sink. I know its crazy but we had done it like that as long as I could remember, wearing nothing but a little cypress gardens foam belt for protection. This particular day things went pretty well up to the point where my mother had to turn out and some slack in the steering cable combined with the hard turn on the way in allowed the cable to get stuck on one of the wiring hooks under the gunnel. The result was no steering with which to turn out with.
My mother did the only thing she could think of and turned off the key but of course the boat continued to go straight into the neighbors dock, then boat actually went straight up in the air and over the dock landing on the other side. Thankfully everyone lived through it pretty well, the worst of it was my mother who caught the corner of the windshield just under her eye. It was the last time my mother ever took me skiing, and there hasnt been a lot of dumping people at the dock since then either..

Joe,

Glad the end result wasn't tragic. I think we all try hard to be safe, but sometimes push the envelope. Anything relating to docks, I stay away from. I know a lot of people used to be into dock starts. I believe it's illegal in most states.

Pretty sure those are still legal in Maine.Laws says you must stay 200 feet from shore, except for the purpose of dropping off or starting skiers,in which case you must take the most direct path out to 200 feet.I don't do 'em though,I'm afraid to let my wife drive that close to shore

Glad you guys jumped in this roller coaster of a thread. It became Jerry Springer like for a while. I think we're all on the same page now.

Have you done a beach start, Mike? You have the perfect set up for it. I don't think you're neighbors would be too thrilled.

     Ken,
We save all that shady stuff for after labor day when 90% of the people are gone.Usually by Mid day on Monday, the locals are all towing from shore. If you want to get out on the water for a cruise before you get your ride back, let me know, mine's back in the water. You and your family are welcome any time. And no,I haven't tried the beach start, but this might be a good time to start thinking about it.

Hey Mike,

I'd love to hook up with you at some point to go for a cruise/board. I think Fred is thinking about three weeks for my boat. The damage is $5,040.00. Just waiting to hear back from my insurance co.

Sept. will be awesome will all the yahoo's off the lake. It will be nice to ski at Mousam anytime of the day and get great water. We can hook up with Jeff too.

I beg to differ. My father in law had a 99 super air with the python. we could easily hit the upper 50's   We tried numerous times to get into the 60's but could not. That boat would hall some behind.

51-52 out the old 351 isn't too bad then, don't run accross the 8.1L engine much in a CC and is pretty rare around here.

There us three Iknow of in a 45 mile radius of me. One on my lake when I did the gps on my boat, the guy who owns the python beast asked if I would check his too. I only can get 43mph out of my boat at the moment. I think its my four blade, I still have some very small bugs to work out so Im hoping for 46-48 with a three blade and some upgrades over the winter.

there are others that can keep up with me and I still have a few more goodies in the works. My heads are still being worked on and the springs are rated for .600 lift so I can always get a different cam as well, and the aluminum exhaust is waiting to be ported and installed too.

doesn't make much since to have the nice heads if you cann't take advantage of them. Next get an aluminum intake.

haha I know I know, I dont want to take the engine out until the summer is over, than Im going to have to bite the bullet and order a cam. Ive got a whole engine though I could rebuild sitting on a stand only problem its been bored .40 and I dont know about going more. when Im ready to buy a cam and intake Im definitely going to call on you guys. it will be a couple of months, I stay on the water through september easy.

You don't have to pull the motor to install a new cam all you need to do is pull the pylon, timing cover and intake. It's a day's project or two days tops but then again while the intakes off you might as well replace it too.

As everybody is talking about top end in a Nautique- All I can think about is how well these things track in the upper 30's low 40's. As they were designed to do. However think about catching a chine in one of these things doing 60- Can you say power turn to end all power turns (if you are lucky)- more likely you will barrel roll the boat. I don't want to sound like Saftey Sam here - but I have seen crap like that happen on Lake Winni in NH more then once. Want to go fast - get a Fountain- 60mph will feel like standing still

Posted By: 79nautique
Date Posted: August-11-2006 at 10:09am
well the power turns are fine at 50mph. I have done several times and it doesn't barrel roll at all. Again it goes back to the conditions and the speed that you can go in those conditions.

Just asked my 17 year old sitting next to me. Emo is short for emotional. Apparently the emo kid is similar to the Goth or gothic. They wear dark colors (if all black is against dress code) and listen to music that promotes extereme violence. Often dye their hair dark or purple. Wear heavy eye liner....

Ken, apparently not a stupid question, since few of us probably knew it.

Will, usually we only talk here about how we hate i/os, mc, first time backers on the ramp, and most marine mechanics. Emos are off limits.
