Just recently purchased a 1986 sn 2001. Noticed it was getting warm when rpms were low, basically idle speed. Checked strainer, cleaned it, put it back together. Noticed it spun around easily on the in and out fittings and thought they were manufactured that way. Upon closer inspection I realized that they were super loose. I tightened them up and no more high temps. Just a tip for the next guy I guess.

Good catch. A little bit of air leaking into the raw water stream can be problematic. Now make sure all all the hose clamps are nice and snug. Use a socket, not just a screw-driver.

Another Tip, Tighten those hoses when it is hot outside not when they are cold and stiff.
You will get a much better seal and take less effort to do it.

If they still used the Vetus strainer in '86, I posted a thread as to where you can get the elusive lid seal.
They harden with age.

Thanks guys, now all I need to do is figure out this hard cold start. Did a lot of reading on here and I think I'll start with timing.

Mike,
Are you pumping the throttle a few times before cranking to let the accelerator pump squirt some gas down the engine?

Yes, full throttle pump twice then try to start at 30 percent. Checked my choke with information acquired here and its functioning properly. Wondering if timing would cause a hard start? Once running its fantastic, at idle its got that perfect rumble. Pulled my plugs and gapped to .0034, also pulled cap off and checked point and advance for any issues, none found.

Mike,
While pumping the throttle, have someone look down the carb and listen to make sure the accelerator pump is actually working. A couple seasons ago, I did have to R&R the pump diaphragm on my Holley.
