Subject: Timing Issue - Need some help!

Hey guys. In short the boat hasn't been idling as smooth as it should be (or used to be) I checked the timing and it is pretty far off. I tried adjusting it with my light, but I can't get it back in time before the engine just shuts off. What am I missing - Basically what are the steps I need to take.    91 Nautique - 351 PCM - PRO TEC (Retro Kit installed 3 years ago)
658 hours. I have looked through the various threads and can't seem to figure it out. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Also could my timing light be jacked up? Is there a way to test that?

You must be trying for something around 10 degrees BTDC. at idle

What do you have for timing right now

Right now the mark for 10 degrees BTDC is about 3 or 4 inches to the right of the post. Not even near the marks by my light. Should it be 10 BTDC at 600 RPM?

10 at 600 sounds good

Are you on the #1 cylinder (the front right)?

If you're on the front left you're making believe it's a Chevy

If I am facing the motor (belts toward me) it is the front right #1 correct?

Just to be sure

A picture's worth a thousand words

For your normal rotation engine

On V8 engines one cylinder head is always forward of the other.
Looking down at the engine from the front top determine which head is most forward.
It will be about 1" forward of the other head.

Your Number 1 cylinder is always in the forward bank/Head on any V8 engine.
In the post above for the Ford, cylinders 1234 are 1" forward of the 5,6,7,8 cylinders in reality even though the pic shows them even.

Knowing this will let you find number one even if you don't know if it is a Ford or Chevy!

Let me test again. Not being on 1 is probably going to be an issue.

So your timing light was just fine and the only thing jacked up was you

Hate it when that happens
